Foods that could help with your hidradenitis suppurativa symptoms

Health

For people with hidradenitis suppurativa learning to control their symptoms and flareups includes making certain lifestyle choices, and changing the food they eat. There are a few kinds of diets people  try; Paleo, Anti-inflammatory, Mediterranean, Keto and more. As well as trying some actual diets that are already out there, some are just trying to work with what studies and other people with HS have experienced and shared. There are foods to cut out or restrict, but here we focus on foods that might help if you include more of them. These are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. If you are looking for a diet that is not overly restrictive and focuses more on a balanced hidradenitis suppurativa diet look to adding these foods into your diet and eating foods that are not overly processed.

Foods that help some people with HS

Eating more foods containing Omega-3 fatty acids

Inflammation plays a big role in HS. Research has shown that eating more omega-3 fatty acids might help reduce some of that inflammation. That would mean in some people with HS they could see some kind of reduction in symptoms. While more research is required, it is still a good thing to add to a healthy diet for your brain, blood vessels and heart too. Where can they be found?

Common foods with omega-3 fatty acids are; walnuts, sardines, various types of seeds (pumpkin, chia, flax), salmon, flaxseed oil, avocado and olive oil.

Eating more foods that are full of fiber

There are already very good health reasons to increase the fiber you consume in your diet. It is good for blood sugar levels, it keeps you feeling full so helps when you are controlling your calories to lose weight and it helps with hormone levels. People with HS who are overweight and need to lose weight could benefit from more fiber in their hidradenitis suppurativa diet. There are different forms of fiber and it can be found in quite a range of foods.

Common foods containing fiber  are; fruit (both fresh and frozen), vegetables (fresh and frozen), herbs (dried and fresh), brown rice, wholegrain bread, wholewheat pasta, beans, lentils, oats, bran, barley, quinoa and couscous.

Using natural sweeteners There are plenty of ways you can enjoy sweet drinks and foods without artificial sugars that are better on your blood sugar levels, and better for your HS symptoms. A hidradenitis suppurativa diet limits all sugars, but can include  natural sweeteners in small amounts.

Common natural sweeteners you can use include; monk fruit, stevia, erythritol, yacon syrup, xylitol, coconut sugar, honey and maple syrup.

Additional supplements to consider

For some, a hidradenitis suppurativa diet should also include some supplements that can help too. A study has shown for example that B-12 in high amounts can help some people with HS. It has also been found that some people have low amounts of zinc which supplements can help with. Low levels of vitamin D are also common so that is another supplement you might want to check out.
