I feel bad for the social media addicts who compare themselves to the people they see online. All the glamorous things they see online are not what they seem. They see someone who looks nice and thin? It’s all in the angles, or photoshop, or filters. Or they see celebrities who are on a whole different level of beautiful? You can thank plastic surgery for that. Of course, this isn’t true for all celebrities. But most of the ones we see online or in the media have gone through some degree of artificial change. No judgment from me, they can do whatever they want to their bodies. I’m sure they have their reasons. But my point is, the beauty standard that’s set in today’s society is unrealistic. Why am I thinking about this? Because I was reading about the Korean pop industry and how common it is for stars to get plastic surgery. Then I got even more curious to see how common it is for American celebrities to do the same. Turns out, it’s a lot more common than I thought. And it doesn’t stop in just the entertainment industry, but it’s present in the online business industry too. I’m not talking about business owners getting plastic surgery, but more about putting up fake appearances. Don’t believe me? It’s all over social media. The cars, the luxurious apartments, the screenshots of thousands of dollars being deposited into their bank accounts, etc. It’s all a front to make them look successful. Plus, to the people being exposed to this type of content for the first time, they think that’s what success looks like. And if they don’t achieve that lifestyle, then they won’t feel successful. It’s not a healthy way of thinking, comparing yourself to the “successful” people, or celebrities and models you see online. The best thing to do is achieve your definition of success at your own pace while being your authentic self.
