Four Facts About Newcastle Wine

Food & Beverages
The city of Newcastle is well-known as a family-friendly place that provides residents with an excellent quality of life, plenty to do, and a beautiful natural setting. While it is well-known as one of the world's largest coal exporting ports, Newcastle is also home to some of the best wines in Australia. This little-known fact has long been a well-kept secret, but recently, as vineyards in the area have begun to grow and produce award-winning wines, the secret is out.

Check out these four facts about Newcastle wine that will make you want to visit this beautiful city and sample the wines for yourself.

1. There is only one winery in the city limits.

While there are dozens of wineries outside Newcastle in the rolling hills of NSW, there is only one winery within the city limits. So if you are looking for fine wines in Newcastle, have a walk around the Newcastle CBD and see if you can locate its coveted local cellar door and winery.

This Newcastle winery uses grapes sourced from Hunter Valley, which is only a short drive away. The cool climate of this region is perfect for growing premium wine grapes, and the results are sure to please any palate. With vintages available in red, white, sparkling, and fortified styles, there is something for everyone at this urban winery.

2. The Newcastle area was once home to Australia's oldest known vineyard.

Fine wines in Newcastle can trace their viticultural history back to 1804, when James Busby planted the country's first vines brought over from Europe. These vines were located in the nearby town of Maitland, just a short drive from Newcastle.

The original vineyard no longer exists, but many of the vineyards in the area today can trace their roots back to this historic vineyard.

3. You can get wine shipped directly from a Newcastle winery.

If you like the taste of wines made in Newcastle using grapes from the surrounding Hunter Valley region, consider signing up for a wine club and getting regular shipments delivered to your door.

A Wine club is an excellent way to get exclusive discounts and offers, as well as access to limited edition and hard-to-find wines. Some of the best wines available for delivery from a Newcastle winery include a 2020 Smoking Gum Shiraz, 2021 Fume Blanc, sparkling Petillant Natural, and a 2017 fortified cabernet shiraz.

4. Newcastle's wine industry is growing rapidly.

With the popularity of wine clubs and home delivery services, it is no surprise that Newcastle's wine industry is booming.

In recent years, several new cellar doors and bottle shops have opened in the area, offering locals and visitors alike the opportunity to taste and purchase some of the best wine in Australia.

With numerous government grants helping support winemakers in the area, the number of Newcastle wineries will likely continue to grow in the years to come.

Get the Best Wine in Newcastle

While some think that Newcastle wine is only available from the surrounding Hunter Valley region, the truth is that the city boasts its own wine made right in the city limits. So, save yourself the drive into the country and explore the local Newcastle wine scene today to access premium wines at great prices.
