How You Can Avoid A Tax Refund Fraud

Finance & Investment
When tax season comes, identity thieves have their sights on committing tax fraud. This type of scam is a worsening problem that many tax payers face on a yearly basis. The thieves steal your personal information so that they could file for tax returns in your name. As a result, they get the money instead of you.

These white-collar criminals find so many ways to get their hands on your data. One common way is to retrieve some of your old files. However, many identity thieves these days are starting to pose as legitimate tax preparers through emails. This is the best way through which the unassuming victim provides the complete personal and financial information without any suspicion. The victim to file the returns in his or her behalf trusts the tax preparer. Oftentimes, the requested refunds are too high.

The fraudulent tax preparer even requests that the refunds be sent to him. He even asks a significant percentage of the refund from the client instead of a fixed fee. These thieves know that they have the edge because they have all the information that they need to commit various scams in your name.

Tax frauds are similar to credit frauds. In both crimes, the thieves steal information to get as much as they could from the victim. People can prevent credit scams by being strict with their data and by monitoring their credit. To avoid tax fraud, you have to basically do the same.

Avoiding Tax Scams by Choosing the Right Tax Preparer

Many consumers hire tax preparers so as to be sure that they don’t miss anything. A professional tax preparer should be able to help you file your tax properly and get you your tax refund. These days, there are identity thieves that pose as credible tax preparers just to get your tax refund and your personal information. The following are some of the basic things that you have to remember in choosing the right tax preparer to help you instead of steal from you:

  1. Carefully check the qualifications

The candidate for the tax preparer position should be able to present a PTIN or a Preparer Tax Identification Number. You should also see if the preparer takes tax preparation classes or if the preparer is affiliated with any organization in his or her profession.

  2. Be sure of the person’s history

Run a search on your candidate with Better Business Bureau. This is an excellent way to find out any issues that could be a problem.

  3. Service fees

There is usually a fee or a rate set for tax preparation. Never hire anyone who asks for a refund percentage.

  4. Refund delivery

Be sure that the tax refund will be directly given to you. Never hire anyone who promises to get a larger refund.

  5. Accessibility

If there are any questions after the filing of the tax return or after April 15, you should be able to instantly contact your tax preparer.

  6. Electronic filing

If the tax preparer is handling at least ten tax refunds, he should file them electronically.

  7. Documents

Your tax preparer should require you of paperwork (W-2).

  8. Review everything

Before signing and submitting the tax return, make sure that you review all the documents. Do not sign a blank tax return sheet. Also make sure to check the tax preparer’s PTIN again.

With the following tips in searching for a credible tax preparer, you should be able to avoid tax scams. To check that you’re not a victim of any other fraud, you should also be aware of the signs of identity fraud.
