After viewing the bathing Ghats and the funeral Ghats in Varanasi there are a number of temples that must be visited for the religious aspect as well as for the architecture and historical value. Some of the most important temples are Referred to as the golden temple, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is famous for its gold plated dome and towers. Built in 1776 this is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in his form as the Lord of the Universe and is frequented by his devotees throughout the year. Kalbhairav Temple – This ancient temple is believed to be very powerful and is dedicated to a form of Shiva. It is believed that the deity’s permission must be sought before staying in Varanasi. Sankatha Temple – This temple is dedicated to the Goddess who takes away Sankath or problems. One can even visit the temples dedicated to each of the 9 planets nearby. The New Vishwanath temple – This temple is found in the compound of the Benares Hindu University and welcomes people of all castes and creeds. The SankatMochan temple – Dedicated to Lord Hanuman, this is near the Assi River. There are plenty of monkeys who have made this temple home. Bharat Mata Temple – This temple has the distinction of being inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936 and has a huge map of India carved on its marbled walls. The Nepali temple – This unique temple was commissioned by the King of Nepal and said to have been made by Nepali workmen. The architecture of the temple is unique and the wood in the temple was brought in from Nepal. This special wood is also resistant to termites. There is a statue of Shiva’s faithful Nandi outside the main sanctum and a Shiva ling called the Pashupatinath Mahadeva. The Tulsi Manas temple – This is a famous temple as well as a popular one. Believed to have been the exact site that Tulsidas wrote the epic Ramcharitramanas, the temple was built in 1964 and has verses from the book on all its walls. These are just some of the well known temples in Varanasi. There are other smaller temples that all have their own history and their own importance. Sarnath, located just 10 kms from Varanasi is also famous as the place where the Buddha preached his first sermon and there are important Buddhist temples here as well. Varanasi is also the birth place of Parsvanath the 23rd Tirthankar of the Jains and there are Jain temples here as well. Ron Innocent Lives in Delhi, INDIA.
