1. A fairy tale house in the woods!
July 11, 2016
Complied by Leah Linhares Photography: Maxime Brouillet; courtesy v2com Read Time: 2 mins
Stirring up memories from our cherished childhood stories, Ar. Jean Verville recreates a “fairytale” family cabin in Montreal, Canada.
Nestled in the privacy of a hemlock forest, FAHOUSE symbolises a home that seems to emerge right out of a children's fantasy tale. Sitting amidst the woods, the black house rises like two giant conifers, intensifying the dreamlike aspect of this architectural proposal.
Built for a couple and their two children, Jean Verville’s archetypal house has a double... (read more)

2. Today Seems Like a Good Day for an Adventure with Gigi the Explorer Fairy
February 26, 2016
As I hibernate inside my warm house preparing to use my indoor sauna for the fifteenth time this week, I cannot help but think, “Today is a good day for an adventure”. As a miniature gardener - this seems like the perfect theme for a fairy garden. When you are trapped inside your home during -21 degree weather, your mind cannot help but wander to all the fun places you would rather be. I could be on a beach in Bora Bora, wandering around a villa in Tuscany, or visiting a shrine in Japan. The ideas all seem better, warmer, and more fun than sitting in this freezing winter chill. The idea of ‘wa... (read more)

3. The 7 Wonders of the Miniature World
February 04, 2016
When planting a miniature fairy garden, I desire a soothing feeling that happens when ground covers are used as lawns. The look of a lawn will unify the miniscape. Here are my top ground covers that work well for lawns or as I call them, "The 7 Wonders of the Miniature World."
Leptinella squalida, Fairy Fern This ground cover is one of my favorites. The reason it is one of my favorites is its feathery and fern-like foliage that is soft green and fresh looking. In spring and during the summer, tiny yellow button-like flowers grow a few inches above the foliage. The Fairy Fern is quite t... (read more)

4. Miniature Doors are Key in Planning a Fairy or Gnome House
February 04, 2016
Whether it is real life or miniature size, a door is defined as “a hinged, sliding, or revolving barrier fixed at the entrance or within a closed space such as a building, room, or vehicle, or in the framework of a cupboard”. Wondering how to use a mini door in your garden? The unique thing about fairy or gnome doors is that you do not need a big garden to add the playfulness of miniature accessories to your yard. All you need to start your fairy garden journey is a tree or stump in your yard. I like to think about doorways as a barrier, similar to a theater curtain, your imagination will buil... (read more)

5. Miniature Gardens with a Grassy'tude
February 04, 2016
You and I both know that certain things or situations can 'set us off'. It can be small and sometimes even quite tiny things that can cause that reaction. It is also this way with miniature fairy gardens (but in a good way). What do I mean? When looking at a garden I need that calm, one-dimensional and most often one colored mass effect to set off the rest of the scene. I have found that using grass, lawn or ground cover will create that effect perfectly. This is especially important because some of us are prone to go a bit overboard and add way too many small accessories to our theme gardens... (read more)

6. Birthdays in the Miniature Garden Go Beyond Plants
January 06, 2016
In honor of my grandchild’s upcoming birthday, my blog is going to be dedicated to this special event. I have experienced many birthdays during my lifetime and I still find this celebration of life an exciting day. Why not plant a fairy garden to symbolize the birthday of someone special to you?
Think how much fun it would be to design a miniature garden using a birthday theme! Wouldn’t a container garden with an art decor lawn table, surrounded by matching chairs, look ideal placed among greenery that was planted in a willow basket? A small piece of gingham fabric, cut into a three-in... (read more)

7. Four Tiny Long Blooming Cuties for Your Miniature Garden
January 05, 2016
Let’s start with what most of us want in our gardens. We want flowers…lots and lots of flowers. Here is a list of my absolute favorite long blooming and compact plants for the sunny indoor or outdoor miniature garden.
Ageratum, ‘Hawaii Blue’, Floss Flower If you like the color blue this one is for you. Planted in the flower border or beside a small fairy house it looks like a lush blue Hydrangea bush. Place any fairies, fences or benches in front of this flower and the accessories immediately look great. The soft blue flower color seems to complement anything you place in front of it – ...
