1. Last US Senate Seat Filled: Louisiana Republican Wins
December 10, 2016

Louisiana voters Saturday chose to send Republican state Treasurer John Kennedy to the U.S. Senate, filling the nation’s last Senate seat and giving the GOP a 52-48 edge in the chamber when the new term begins in January.  Kennedy had always been the runoff election’s front-runner in a state that overwhelmingly supported Donald Trump. He defeated Democrat Foster Campbell, a state utility regulator whose chances were seen as such a long-shot that national Democratic organizations...... (read more)

2. This Day in History: America Inches Toward Vietnam War
November 16, 2016

In the fall of 1961, President John F. Kennedy signed off on sending more U.S. military aid to Vietnam — just a few hundred soldiers to train South Vietnamese soldiers. Kennedy was neither the first nor the last American president to confront the conundrum of the so-called domino theory, the idea that the Soviet Union (and Communist China) were seeking to expand their influence in Southeast Asia, first in Vietnam and then its neighbors. President Dwight D. Eisenhower...... (read more)

3. US, Cuba Stepping Up Efforts to Save Hemingway Artifacts
October 12, 2016

Ernest Hemingway was a pack rat who saved everything. Fortunately for fans of the literary icon, U.S. and Cuban officials and scholars have been working together to preserve artifacts at his former estate in Cuba - items they say will help illuminate his colorful legacy.   At a forum Wednesday at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum in Boston, Hemingway experts from both countries underscored their determination to save the books, letters, fishing rods, mounted animal...... (read more)

4. After 15 years, The Last Artifacts of 9/11 Are Put to Rest
September 11, 2016

Behind the barbed wire, the white minivan's busted windows and crumpled roof hint at its story. But forklifted to this windblown spot on the John F. Kennedy International Airport tarmac, between a decommissioned 727 and an aircraft hangar, it's doubtful passing drivers notice it at all. In the long struggle with the searing memories of 9/11, though, the van's solitary presence here marks a small but significant transition point. Tons of wreckage - twisted steel beams...... 5. Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Birthday’ Gown Goes to Auction
September 07, 2016

The flesh-colored, skin-tight beaded gown Marilyn Monroe wore during her breathless rendition of "Happy Birthday' to President John F. Kennedy is going on the auction block this fall. Julien's Auctions is offering the sequined stunner at a November 17 sale in Los Angeles. The auction house believes the gown could fetch $2 million to $3 million. The sultry actress wore the barely-there dress at Kennedy's 45th birthday celebration at Madison Square Garden on...... (read more)

The New York Police Department says officers have responded to John F. Kennedy International Airport following reports of shots fired. Shots were reported around 9:30 p.m. Sunday in Terminal 8. Officials evacuated the area as they investigated. The NYPD said late Sunday that they could not confirm whether any shots were actually fired. No other information was immediately available. 7. Solar-powered Plane Lands in Spain
June 23, 2016

An airplane powered entirely by the sun landed in Seville, Spain early Thursday after a 71-hour journey across the Atlantic from New York. The one-seat Solar Impulse 2 took off from New York's John F. Kennedy Airport early Monday morning on the 15th leg of its journey around the world. The solar-powered plane was piloted on this leg of its around-the-world journey by Swiss aviator Bertrand Piccard, cruising at an average speed of 70 kilometers an hour. The carbon fiber Solar Impulse 2 has a 72-meter wingspan, which is longer than the wingspan of a Boeing 747 and weighs about as... (read more)

8. Solar Impulse 2 Begins Journey Across the Atlantic
June 20, 2016

Equipped with nothing but the energy from the sun, a solar-powered plane took off from New York's John F. Kennedy Airport early Monday morning on the 15th leg of its journey around the world. The Solar Impulse 2 has begun one of the most hazardous parts of its worldwide sojourn -- a flight across the Atlantic Ocean. Swiss aviator Bertrand Piccard is at the helm.  He and his compatriot Andre Borschberg have taken turns solo piloting the single-seat aircraft. Piccard will take short naps during the 90-hour flight across the Atlantic.  He and Borschberg have learned medi... (read more)

The solar-powered airplane Solar Impulse 2 took off Friday for New York City on the latest leg of an around-the-world trip. The experimental plane left Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania, late Friday. It is scheduled to fly over the Statue of Liberty before landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport about 4 p.m. EDT (2000 UTC) Saturday. It's the latest leg of a historic bid by Swiss pilots Bertrand Piccard and Andre Borschberg, who are sharing navigating duties. Organizers say the flight, which is using no fuel, is to show the possibilities of clean energy technology. Their ulti... (read more)

BOSTON— Ernest Hemingway penned 47 possible endings to "A Farewell to Arms," eight of which are on display at a new exhibition on the famed American writer at the John F. Kennedy presidential library - along with the one that actually concluded the classic World War I novel. "If a person wants to make their mark as a writer they have to work very hard, and this exhibit really shows how hard he worked,'' said Patrick Hemingway, the author's only surviving child who on Tuesday toured the exhibition that opened Monday in Boston and runs through Dec. 31.
