1. Poll: Americans Want Trump to Focus on Health Care First
November 17, 2016

Health care is the top issue Americans want Donald Trump to address during his first 100 days in the White House, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released Thursday, an apparent rebuke of outgoing President Barack Obama's signature reform, Obamacare. Some 21 percent of Americans want Trump to focus on the health care system when he enters the White House on Jan. 20, according to the Nov. 9-14 poll, conducted in the week after the Republican won the U.S. presidential election. Jobs...... (read more)

2. Repeal Obamacare? Harder Than It Looks
November 13, 2016

"Obamacare is just blowing up," said then-U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Florida last month, telling his audience that health care costs could rise far past the levels the White House has forecast. By his own estimation, Trump said, "you're talking about 60, 70, 80 percent increases, not 25 percent." Trump went on to say, "Obamacare has to be repealed and replaced, and it has to be replaced with something much less...... (read more)

In an interview slated to air on 60 Minutes on CBS-TV Sunday night, Trump said the revised plan "will be great health care for much less money." 5. Colorado Voters Consider First-in-Nation Healthcare Experiment
September 29, 2016

Voters in the swing state of Colorado aren’t just going to the polls to pick a new president this November, they’ll also decide if they want to abandon the Obama administration's signature health program, the so-called Obamacare, in favor of a single payer healthcare system. VOA’s Katherine Gypson followed activists on both sides of this heated debate over a first-in-the-nation experiment.... (read more)

6. Supreme Court Considers Obamacare Birth Control Mandate
March 24, 2016

The U.S. Supreme Court heard a case Wednesday that found them deeply divided over a familiar topic: contraceptive health care. With the death of Justice Anthony Scalia, the court has only eight judges to hear the case, four of whom usually lean to the liberal side and four to the conservative. The justices heard about 90 minutes of oral arguments Wednesday on how women who work for religiously affiliated institutions that object to birth control can access contraceptives through their health insurance. The court ruled in previous years that, under the U.S. health care act known as ... (read more)

7. Super Prez and Global Warming Worriers Save Obama's Legacy, Our lives and the Planet?
December 22, 2015

Wow - is the only interjection or exclamatory to address the wonder of the Obama administration. An eighteen trillion dollar debt, the Obamacare nightmare, foreign policy failures galore, and the all new faux racism problem can be added to the worst moral decline in America’s history; all under the auspices of the Obama administration. Just, as his last year approaches, the dynamic duo of Obama and Kerry team up to save the very planet by means of a non-binding hugely expensive and totally un-enforceable climate change contract that has all the promise of a warhead, while under clo... 15. No Medicare = No Feds....Not!
January 28, 2015

In the “good old days” (in healthcare, that means more than a week ago), it was understood that if a client didn’t accept any state or federal healthcare program dollars (e.g. Medicare, Medicaid, CHAMPUS, TriCare, Supp Plans), they would not expect to get a “knock on the door” from any federal regulatory authority. No federal or state healthcare program dollars used to mean the client would only tend to hear from state regulators or commercial payors. Those days are done! Federal law enforcement is increasingly pursuing alleged criminal wrongdoing in the “non-government” healthcare spac... (read more)

16. The 7 Not So Secrets for Every Compliance Plan
January 27, 2015

When a healthcare provider cares for a patient, many times, the provider will set out directives for the patient to follow in order to live a healthier life. These changes may include changes in lifestyle, eating habits, and obedience in taking medications. A patient’s compliance with these directives instructs the provider on how to care for the patient in the future. A patient who does not follow these directives may suffer health consequences. Similarly, the government sets out legal regulations for healthcare providers. The government expects healthcare providers to comply with it... (read more)

17. It's 2015 All Over Again
January 16, 2015

It may seem like the only thing that changed January 1st was a tick of a clock…and it’s pretty understandable in healthcare, since we’ve all been on the same trajectory for several years now—declining reimbursement and strategies to reduce overhead, enhance contracting rates and develop new income streams. What’s that mean? New medical practice development, existing practices reconsidering overhead and profits allocation as partners retire, ancillary revenue streams (e.g. pharmacies) and the enhanced emergence of niche providers (especially in the drug and alcohol treatment space). Ph... (read more)

19. What Was Ezekiel Emanuel Thinking?
October 20, 2014

In 1984, Colorado governor Richard Lamm gave a now-infamous interview in which he said the very ill elderly should die and get out of the way, thus helping the generations following them to thrive in political and economic environments that have fewer claims on scarce resources (a canard on its face, given that economies are ever-expanding). Thirty years later, along comes Ezekiel Emanuel, brother of Chicago Mayor Rahm, buddy of Barack, and a principal architect of the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. In a lengthy post at The Atlantic, Emanuel, a physician and ethicist, posits th... (read more)

21. The Next Passenger on the Health Train: Physician Assistants
August 21, 2014

The scope of Physician Assistants' practice is a dynamic and hotly debated area of law which shares many similarities with the nurse supervision issues we covered in a recent article (available here). House Bill 1275 would have also allowed for an expansion in the PA field and was included on the "Health Train" compilation of bills introduced during the Florida legislature's recent session. As we know nothing on the Train passed before the session ended and though it may gain forward momentum next time, here' how the laws stand today: Florida law allows physicians to delegate health car... 22. Physicians & Nurses in for a Long Ride on the Health Train
August 15, 2014

Nearly half of U.S. States have already expanded the scope of nursing practice and several more are analyzing whether it is appropriate. The debate between physicians and nurses regarding how much autonomy a nurse should be given is a political hotbed that will likely be revisited by the legislature in the near future. Until that time, the Board of Medicine and the Board of Nursing will quietly continue to enforce the present requirements. Here’s how they stand today: Under Florida’s current laws, in addition to the practice of professional nursing, an advanced registered nurse practiti... (read more)

24. Impact of New Health Care Initiative on Rural Hospitals
June 27, 2014

Fiscal Impact of Obamacare on Rural Hospitals For some time now, rural hospitals have been suffering the financial impact imposed by outrageous healthcare costs, an increase in outpatient procedures, shorter hospital stays, and the inability to provide more complicated services. In upholding the Affordable Care Act, the Supreme Court decided to permit states to opt-out of the Medicaid expansion. Despite the Federal Government's agreement to pay 100% of the cost of the expansion for the first 3 years and a minimum of 90 % during following years, 24 states still opted-out. Five of these states ... (read more)

May 13, 2014

Healthcare professionals and businesses are routinely barraged with people who claim to be able to generate business for them. The business of healthcare is like none other in its abhorrence of anything that even smells like payment for patient referrals, so professionals and businesses alike have to be extremely cautious and well advised in crafting marketing and related business-enhancing relationships.
