2. Voice-Overs or Subtitles: The Pros and Cons
October 28, 2015

Voice-overs and subtitles are the two primary options for foreign language translation of any multimedia project that includes audio. While voice-over translation can be slightly more expensive than subtitles, it is also a less time-consuming process, in many cases. When determining a global marketing strategy that involves multimedia, consider the following when deciding on your approach to audio translation. 3. Does Your Voice Do You Justice?
January 08, 2015

When you try to balance the scales regarding how others perceive you, there is no doubt that your visual image has the most weight. Your content or verbal image has the least. The one aspect of your image which is often ignored is how you sound. Your vocal image accounts for more than a third of the overall image you project; and, that sound is what you hear on your voicemail or some other form of recording equipment – not the voice you hear in your head. Whenever I address an audience, I always ask them if they believe that their image has an impact on their business. Of course, ever... (read more)

4. You Have a Better Voice Inside of You - Really!
December 01, 2014

It may seem hard to believe, but you are not stuck with what you hear on recording equipment. You have a richer, warmer, more mature-sounding voice inside of you. Most people rely on their throat and vocal cords to do the majority of the work when speaking. However, when you change your voice placement, you will immediately notice a difference in the quality of your sound because your voice will be vibrating in your mid-torso region. Those who possess great voices are vibrating in that area because they are using their chest cavity as their primary sounding board and amplifier. In ... (read more)

5. How to Increase Your Volume Without Yelling
October 14, 2014

When you increase your volume, does your throat hurt? If you root for your favorite sports team, is your voice hoarse the next day? Perhaps you have no voice by the next day. All three of these situations are known as vocal abuse. If any of these scenarios sound familiar, then you are not increasing your volume correctly. Yelling or shouting to be heard means that you are pushing your voice from your throat. It also means that you are raising your pitch which results in a harsh quality. When you push your voice over an extended period of time in this manner, you can do serious ... (read more)

6. What Does Your Voice Say About You?
August 08, 2014

Your visual image makes a statement; your verbal image makes a statement. But what about your vocal image? Have you ever considered what the sound of your speaking voice says about you? When we hear a rich, resonant, deep voice, like that of Catherine Zeta Jones or James Earl Jones, we are captivated. Would you describe your voice as captivating? Most people never consider that 37% of the image they project is the sound of their speaking voice. By the way, I’m talking about the one you hear on your answering machine – not the one you hear in your head. If you are soft-spoken, ... (read more)

7. Does Your Voice Complete Your Professional Image Or Detract From It?
July 29, 2014

As a people, we are concerned about the image we project. Certainly in business we want to project a professional image. Does your speaking voice complete that image or does it detract? By the way, I’m not talking about the voice you hear in your head. I’m referring to the sound you hear on your voicemail – the sound by which everyone else recognizes you. If you are soft-spoken, for example, the image you are projecting is one of insecurity or weakness or diffidence. By learning to increase your volume to a normal level of sound, that image – which may have been 'screaming' lack of c... (read more)

8. Do You Know the Difference Between Projecting Your Voice and Yelling?
May 06, 2014

When you need to speak with more volume, do you know if you are yelling or are you projecting your voice? If you are like most people, you probably yell or shout to be heard. The problem with increasing your volume in this manner is that it is hard on your throat and vocal cords. And, it can also be hard on your listeners' ears. The tremendous strain placed on your throat and vocal cords by shouting or yelling hurts your voice. This is why you may notice that your throat gets sore, your voice may become raspy or hoarse, and you may even experience voice loss. All 3 symptoms are called voc... (read more)

9. The Good Wife - Which Female Character Best Describes Your Abilities at Self-Promotion?
April 22, 2014

I recently saw a posting on a well-known social media site regarding female self-promotion. As I read through the numerous comments by the various readers, it brought to mind the 2 top female characters on The Good Wife. 1. When Alicia Florrick was first seeking a job with a law firm, she appeared shy and lacking in confidence because she had been out of the workforce for a number of years. And, she was turned down by all the firms where she had applied except for Lockhart/Gardner. When she was hired by that firm, her abilities were questioned by all (even Will Gardner, the managing... April 09, 2014

One of the 1st things you do when you start a new business is to create a business card. While the purpose of the card is to identify you and your business, your goal with that card is to project a positive image of that business. In fact, you should probably hire a creative talent to design your card because you want an image that looks professional and successful. Your voice is a form of calling card as well. When you consider that the sound of your voice accounts for a good 37% of the image you project, what does yours say about you? Does it sound professional? What about over the... (read more)

11. 3 Steps for a More Mature-Sounding Voice
April 01, 2014

The number of adult voices I hear which sound like teenagers, preteens, or younger still is astounding. Add the familiar Valley Girl sound to the picture and you have an image which does not project maturity. I am not talking about sounding old. I am talking about a voice which you would call ageless. If you were to phone me and did not know how old I was, you would be unable to tell if I was 25 or 75. Because my voice has had training and I have taken the stress or the pressure away from my throat and vocal cords, my voice is not aging as quickly as those whose voices have not had ... (read more)

12. Stop Raising Your Inflection at the End of Your Sentences - You Sound Like a Valley Girl!
March 18, 2014

If you want an image that exudes confidence, one of the things you should do is to stop the rise of your inflection at the end of your sentences. I call this the Valley Girl sound or Valley Girl-ese. Unfortunately, it does not sound mature. Inflection refers to the rise or fall of the pitch of the voice. The voice naturally rises when you ask a question; however, at the end of a statement, the pitch of the voice usually drops. When you raise the pitch as you finish speaking, that lilt or cadence on the upswing makes you sound unsure of yourself. It is a habit which is learned and i... (read more)
