1. Psalm 1 Through 10
October 18, 2013

[These are Psalms 1 through 10 from the Holy Bible, Hoehn Version, copyright 2011. (Amazon) They have been revised from the King James Version into modern English by Frederick Hoehn.] ___Psalm 1 1 Blessed is the man that won’t follow the advice of the ungodly, and doesn’t stand in the way of sinners, and doesn’t sit in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and he meditates in His law day and night. 3 And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that produces its fruit in its season, also, his leaf shall not wither, and whatever he ... 2. RESTORATION FELLOWSHIP CHURCH
May 23, 2013

RESTORATION FELLOWSHIP CHURCH, where Jay Ahlemann serves as Senior Pastor, is a church that understands that everyone needs some kind of restoration in life. We need restoration in our homes, our families, our relationships, our physical well-being, our emotions, our financial circumstances and in many other areas of our lives. The best-known and best-loved Psalm in all of the Book of Psalms would be the 23rd Psalm. For centuries, these words of the Psalmist David, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, have brought hope, healing, and comfort to millions of people in the darkest ... (read more)

3. The Exercise Of Emulation
November 17, 2012

A writing exercise that is helpful in learning a very specific style of writing is called Emulation. This is done to match the style of a specific author. In essence, you create an entirely new passage using an existing passage as your guide. For example if you wanted to try to write in the same manner as the Psalmist you might copy a passage of Scripture... Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter his gates w... 4. Israel's Rebellion at the Red Sea
December 04, 2010

The children of Israel that God sent Moses to bring out of Egyptian bondage into the Promised Land were a faithless group almost from the very beginning. Their rebellion against God began before Mt. Sinai and even before the Red Sea crossing. The Psalmist said, "Our fathers in Egypt did not understand your wonders; they did not remember the multitude of your mercies, but rebelled by the sea--the Red Sea." (Psa. 106:7 NKJV) It is a profitable study to look into the details of that rebellion and see what can be learned from it that would be of value to us today. When God appeared to Mose... (read more)

5. God's Groceries: A Super Bible School Activity for Memorizing Psalm 119:103
July 29, 2010

What’s your favorite food? Chocolate chip cookies? Lasagna? Bacon and eggs? Now what’s really better? Your favorite food or God’s Word? I hope you said, “God’s Word.” The psalmist thought so in Psalm 119:103, which says: “How sweet are your promises to my taste! Sweeter than honey to my mouth!“ Every word in the Bible can nourish our souls. Here’s a fun Bible school activity that can be played much like Bingo. But this game will introduce your kids to foods listed in the Bible and the contexts in which they’re found. It’s called “God’s Groceries”. Here’s what you do: This game ... (read more)

6. The Blessing of Affliction and the Goodness of God
October 01, 2009

In the book of Psalms 119, verse 71, there is a passage that has come to have personal meaning to me as I have contemplated it over time and made application to the things that have befallen me. The Psalmist says, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted.” (NKJV) Earlier in the same chapter the writer had said, “Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word.” (Psalms 119:67 NKJV) We all learn very early in life that we will someday die but it just does not register with us other than as an intellectual abstraction. Death is for us so far off into the future (we th... (read more)

7. Days of Prophetic Fulfillment and the Theology of Distinctions
January 03, 2009

In America anyone who knows the biblical subject of eschatology (the last things) has been warning that all the signs of the last days are culminating in this generation. Whose listening and what does it mean besides a lot of trouble? As America starts off in a new walk down secular liberalisms all new and shiny path many people who knew that this nation alone once stood out as the most uniquely different nation in history are concerned, afraid, and in some cases even panicky. Morality started a high speed nose dive with Hollywood’s help about forty years ago and today there doesn’t... (read more)

8. The Keeper of Jerusalem and psalm 121
March 05, 2008

Psalm 121 reads as follows from the Oxford Annotated Bible: I lift my eyes up to the hills- From where will my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth, He will not let your foot be moved: He who keep Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep The Lord is your keeper: The Lord is your shade at your right hand, The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night, The Lord will keep you from all evil, He will keep your life, The Lord will keep your going and your coming in From this time on and forevermore. The psalmist isn’t neces... (read more)

9. Prayer and Psalm 74
July 06, 2007

Central to this psalm is the seeking and acknowledgment of God’s intervenition in specific ways and instances. Verses 12 thru 17 group as an acknowledgment of what God has already done and that God is the source point, first on this list is verse 12 where it says, “ But you oh God, are my king from old, you bring salvation upon the earth." Here it is probable the psalmist is more talking about ultimate salvation. But it is also saying you bring salvation to the earth, or in the King James version in the midst of the earth so it might be an idea to refer to the ways in which God sav... (read more)

10. Prayer with Psalm 77
July 06, 2007

Here the psalmist doubly distressed. He is immersed with some onslaught of personal problems and difficulties and he is not going to relent on seeking God's help in the matter. In verse 2 it says, " When I was distressed, I sought the Lord, at night I stretched out untiring hands and my soul refused to be comforted." Here he is saying he will pursue the Lord till no end until he gets his answer. He refuses to let go of his request or requests, which are personal in nature as he wrestles with the issues in the deep of the night. He is doubly distressed because not only does he... (read more)

11. Prayer and psalm 61
July 05, 2007

Central to this psalm is the theme of reliance on God. The psalmist David, has apparently been chased to the hither lands of the earth and while we don’t have a precise map as to where he was, he was as far away as possible. Verse 2 says, “From the ends of the earth I call you, I call as my heart grows faint, lead me to the rock that is higher than I, For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe." His outer circumstances weren’t the best. His was fainting and his own personal strength had a fading reliability for him. At this point, he is talking about a strong tower... (read more)

12. Prayer with psalm 130
July 04, 2007

Psalm 130 reads from the Oxford Annotated Bible as follows: Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! Let your ears be attentive to the voice of my supplication. If you O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, So that you may be revered I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, In his word I hope, my soul waits for the Lord, more than those who watch for the morning, more than those who watch for the morning, O Israel, hope in the Lord! For with the Lord there is ... (read more)
