Author Comment / Biography:
I was born on Decatur Island, San Juan Archipelago, Washington, in the Northwest corner of the contiguous United States. I was exiled from this islanded paradise, by my father, at the age of fifteen (as a consequence of a social indiscretion), to sail as a ‘ship’s boy’ on the five masted schooner Vigilant engaged in lumber trade with China (last of the great commercial sailing ships). My secondary education was aboard the schooner Vigilant, and along Guangzhou (Canton) China’s waterfront. My oriental education (late 1930s), while not academic was certainly an undergraduate dialectic in the tragedy of war. My teen years were spent in the Pearl River estuary in China while the Japanese incursion into the Chinese mainland was on-going.

Later, in WW II, I served in Europe (1942-45) in the 515th Airborne.

After my discharge in 1945 I went north to what was then the territory of Alaska. In 1951 I obtained my B.S. in Mining from University of Alaska’s School of Mines. I spent the next 25 years of my life working in Alaska’s salmon industry in one capacity of another, never once having occasion or opportunity to turn a single shovel-full of dirt in mining. In 1975 my wife and I moved to San Francisco where I spent the next 30 years as a property manager and as a receiver for the Marin Superior Court of California.

Subsequent to my retirement I’ve done a lot of mountain trail hiking and some writing. I’ve published two books, ‘Shadow of the Imago’ ISBN 1-4241-4075-7, and ‘Windjamming to China’ ISBN 97801-60911-542-5. I’ve also been published in the ‘Feathered Flounder e-magazine. 1. This Business of Consciousness
February 27, 2013

Newton and Einstein drove their minds into regions untouched by experience. Mozart and Debussy appeared to be men born without some obstruction that prevents ordinary people from communion with the sublime. Both varieties are archetypes of the furthest advancement of an evolutionary process which re...

2. Rock as the Articulator of the Human Psyche.
February 27, 2013

We Homo sapiens have, since time immemorial, recognized the rock as a primal symbol of stability. Even though we’ve left stone far behind, primarily consigning it to nonfunctional aesthetic applications, we consistently turn back to the rock as a dominant icon of strength. We turn back to it, for so...

3. Is "Free-verse" the Malignancy that's Killing Poetry?
February 21, 2013

I am frustrated with most of what passes for poetry today. Too many poems lack craft and intellectual rigor, their words are simply a screed of banal sentiment. I submit that the use of meter and rhyme would do much to invigorate contemporary poetry. I further submit that there is a general and dish...
