Memorable Quote 1: Mistakes I've made from not learning from mistakes I've made

Author Comment / Biography:
I began my flying career in Italy as a corporate pilot for a kitchen furniture factory in Trieste. Later I flew for a shipping company in Genoa flying to ports throughout the Mediterranean. After a brief period as an instrument flight instructor, I qualified for an FAA airline transport pilot license and I took up my first airline flying position in Sana'a, Yemen Arab Republic, as it was known then.

I hold a bachelor of science (cum laude) degree in professional aeronautics from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Fl., U.S.A.

After graduation I worked for the Australian national flag carrier for six years as a ground instructor, where I trained company pilots in normal and non-normal procedures in the Boeing 747 classic and Boeing 767 flight simulators. I also taught Boeing 767 aircraft performance in the classroom.

Subsequently, I flew for several airlines based in the Far East and Europe. I am type qualified in the Boeing 727, Lockheed L1011, and Boeing 747-400 series aircraft.

After I lost my first class medical certificate, I needed to add a "second string to my bow", so I enrolled at Chiang Mai University in their TEFL Certificate course. While there I studied linguistic theory and communicative teaching methodology.

I have worked as a teacher of English as a foreign language in two periods for a total of five years. On both occasions I was privileged to teach university students and young working adults at the American University Alumni Language Center in Bangkok.

I enjoy teaching very much, whether it be to ab initio pilots, airline pilots or Thai university students learning English, I derive a great deal of satisfaction from my students' success in achieving their objectives.

My interests are travelling, sailing, reading, music, art, and flying.

1. Flying In India After The Gujarat Earthquake
June 28, 2013

We landed in New Delhi on the 25th January, 2001 after flying almost 8 hours from London Gatwick. The airline had a contract to fly Indian muslims to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for the annual Haj from Bangalore, Madras, and New Delhi.

That night we had a party in someone’s hotel room which lasted...

2. Exploring Flying Opportunities In Casablanca
June 12, 2013

During a period of leave from the South East Asian carrier I had been flying for, I decided to explore the possibility of securing a position with the Moroccan national carrier based in Casablanca. I had always wanted an excuse to go to Casablanca since seeing the 1942 classic starring Humphrey Bog...

3. Cochabamba By 707 Freighter With A 24 Hour Layover
May 15, 2013

I had just returned from the Dominican Republic where I had applied unsuccessfully for a pilot job on the 727 and I was sitting in a Miami hotel weighing up my options. I called a friend in the aviation business who told me a Bolivian airline had an immediate need for a 707 co-pilot and he suggested...

4. Flight To Tunis For The Arab Conference
May 11, 2013

The brand new Boeing 727 Advanced was powered by a variant of the three Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines for better performance at high altitude airfields. It was equipped with dual Litton INS (inertial navigation systems) and the latest Collins flight director approach guidance system. It also had a...

5. Bangkok Experience During A 16 Hour Layover
May 05, 2013

Flying up the Gulf of Siam in a Boeing 727 at 37,000 feet we were in and out of the cloud tops and experiencing moderate turbulence at times. With the 727's high wing loading we couldn’t request a higher level because we were already quite close to “coffin corner”. That’s the top area on the perfor...

6. Sana'a To Hodeida By Vespa And DC3?
April 26, 2013

On a day off from flying I decided to ride my Vespa from Sana’a to Hodeida on the Red Sea. I asked Katia, my Italian girlfriend, if she would like to accompany me. She was an adventurous type and readily agreed. I told her we had to cross two mountain ranges and I estimated it would take about six ...

7. Ferry Flight From Seattle To Prestwick
April 19, 2013

We had completed Boeing 727 simulator training in Vancouver at CP Air’s training facility, and flight training with Boeing in Seattle. We had all flown the 727 before and we were now ready to take delivery of a brand new aircraft at Boeing Field which we would ferry to the Middle East. The planned r...

8. Bird Strike Out Of Bombay
April 14, 2013

We were cleared for takeoff on runway 27 at Bombay’s Santa Cruz airport. On board was a full load of Indian muslims who were on their once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Mecca. It was a hot day and we were close to the maximum takeoff gross weight of 430,000 lbs. The aircraft, a Lockheed L1011-1, had ...

9. Low On Fuel Over Central London
April 07, 2013

I had just got my commercial pilot’s license and I didn’t have enough flying hours to get a corporate flying job or any job for that matter, so I decided the quickest way to overcome this problem was to buy a small economical two seater as an hours builder.

At the time there were small aer...

10. In-Flight Emergency Over The Apennines
April 05, 2013

Some years ago I was a corporate pilot for a kitchen furniture factory based in Trieste in Venezia Guilia province of northern Italy. Every second Tuesday we had a scheduled flight to Valence in the Rhone Valley in France. The company aircraft was a turbocharged PA23 Piper Aztec E. Because the air...
