Biography I have been an avid gardener all of my life. We lived in Dane County Wisconsin for 20 years. The dark, fertile soil was beautiful to work with, and boy did we produce the groceries. We lived on Lake Mendota, watered with lake water life was good.
In 1999 we moved to northern Wisconsin, it has been a shock. The soil sucks, rocks, and clay. I have spent the last ten years creating my soil. Composting yearly. I till the leaves in the fall and till compost in the spring.
Now I have a really good base to plant. Thanks to my 1969 Troy Built tiller with a 12 horse Briggs and Stratton motor, which is about five years old now. I also use a Mantis tiller the four-cycle Honda motor; I love to use both of them. Thanks to these tools I can produce the most vigorous tomatoes I have ever seen, great potatoes, onions, carrots, cabbage, Brussel sprouts, broccoli, and kale.
I try to grow the cold weather crops to store in our root cellar. We also do a lot of canning. We have a short growing. Season in the Northwoods. It seems like every year we have a frost the first week in September, and then it warms up for a couple of weeks after that, so we bundle up the plants and hope for the best. The Brussel sprouts and broccoli, cabbage, kale thrive in the cold weather. So we adapt to the weather. It is nice to have an early spring. 2016 we had an extra two weeks of growing weather it was nice. Now as I get older and have had back surgery. I have to work smarter not harder.
