Author: Nancy Daniels

Company: Voice Dynamic

Region: Somerdale, NJ

Memorable Quote 1: Your voice speaks volumes about you - what is yours saying?

Memorable Quote 2: If you are not nervous in public speaking, then I am.

Author Comment / Biography:
The Voice Lady, Nancy Daniels, has been involved in voice training since 1977. A graduate of Gettysburg College with a BA in music, she discovered the techniques for improving the sound of the speaking voice while in graduate school at American University in Washington, D.C.

Prior to her move to Canada in 1981, Nancy worked for G. Schirmer, ICM Artists and the Aspen Music Festival where she was director of public relations. Aware that her own speaking voice was a predominant factor in obtaining employment with such reputable firms, she believes that a dynamic and mature-sounding voice is a fantastic asset, increasing one’s confidence and self-esteem.

While in Canada, Nancy taught Voice and Public Speaking at the University of Western Ontario’s Graduate School of Journalism, The Ivey School of Business, and St. Peter’s Seminary. In 1989 she started her own company, Communication Dynamics, for businesses and the general public.

Upon returning to the States in 1997, she opened her business under the name Voice Dynamic and from 1999 to 2003 continued to teach Voice & Diction and Public Speaking at the college level.

In addition to her guest speaking engagements, Nancy holds private, group, and corporate workshops throughout the United States and Canada.

For those unable to work with her directly, she is now offering Voicing It!, the only voice improvement course on video covering The Voice Dynamic Approach.

161. Approaching the Lectern With Composure and Grace
September 10, 2012

The first time I had to introduce myself professionally was one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of my life. I remember sitting, waiting for my turn to stand and walk to the lectern amidst 150 members of the London, Canada Chamber of Commerce. At first I was relaxed until it dawned on me tha...

162. Are You Aware That Your Soft Spoken Voice Is a Liability?
September 04, 2012

In today’s fast-paced business world, speaking in a soft-spoken voice is definitely not to your advantage: you need to be heard the 1st time you say it. While softer levels of volume may be culturally correct in some countries, here in the States, we tend to talk in a volume that is comfortably he...

163. Public Speaking: What Many Novice Speakers Never Think to Do
September 04, 2012

It is simple, it is basic, it is fundamental, and, it is a necessity. It is something we do every day without a 2nd thought. At the lectern, however, it is something we do not allow to happen and yet it is something we cannot do without.

It is called breathing. The 1st thing your body did ...

164. Excessive Nasality Smothers a Deep, Masculine Voice
September 04, 2012

So, you’re looking for a deeper, sexier speaking voice but you’ve got a nasal twang. Does this mean that you’re stuck with a high-pitched voice? No. Is it possible to have a better sound? You bet!

Most people are not speaking at their optimum pitch or within their optimum range. The result...

165. If Others Cannot Understand You, Why Speak?
August 28, 2012

Recently, a manager of a company inquired about voice training for a 19-year-old male receptionist/telemarketer employee, saying that, “he speaks too softly, uses countless ‘ums’ and ‘uhs’, and in general sounds very insecure.” Of course, my 1st question is why anyone would hire an individual whose...

166. 3 Steps for Eliminating Nasality
August 28, 2012

There is no doubt that excessive nasality can be most annoying for your listeners. Voices which possess excessive nasality sound like Fran Drescher, Don Johnson, and pro golfer, Jack Nicklaus. Of course, Fran Drescher has made a fortune on her sound which is akin to nails on a blackboard. If you...

167. Public Speaking Is About Your Audience - Not You
August 16, 2012

You’ve been invited to speak or perhaps your boss has ‘requested’ you speak. Whatever your reason for speaking, if you are like most people, nervousness takes over as you begin the process of anxiously awaiting the date. Hopefully, you create your speech or presentation well in advance and practi...

168. Do You Really Need to Warm Up Your Voice in Public Speaking?
August 16, 2012

Unless you are scheduled to speak at 7 in the morning, I would suggest not warming up the speaking voice. Since you use your speaking voice throughout your day, my question is 'What is there to warm up?' The speaking voice is not like the singing voice where you will be using several octaves, possib...

169. Mastering Movement While Presenting
August 07, 2012

A problem you may have in public speaking is how to move effectively and what to do with your hands. There are no absolutes in being expressive in your delivery aside from exhibiting no expression, the latter of which is boring and most certainly the fastest way to put your audience to sleep.

170. When Throat Clearing Interferes With Your Delivery in Public Speaking
August 07, 2012

If you do some research on the internet about excessive throat clearing, you will find a host of remedies, elixirs, cures and magic potions that promise to fix the problem. Certainly it is important to have a lubricated throat when you speak. Also true is the fact that certain prescriptive medicatio...
