Memorable Quote 1: Your voice speaks volumes about you - what is yours saying?

Memorable Quote 2: If you are not nervous in public speaking, then I am.

Author Comment / Biography:
The Voice Lady, Nancy Daniels, has been involved in voice training since 1977. A graduate of Gettysburg College with a BA in music, she discovered the techniques for improving the sound of the speaking voice while in graduate school at American University in Washington, D.C.

Prior to her move to Canada in 1981, Nancy worked for G. Schirmer, ICM Artists and the Aspen Music Festival where she was director of public relations. Aware that her own speaking voice was a predominant factor in obtaining employment with such reputable firms, she believes that a dynamic and mature-sounding voice is a fantastic asset, increasing one’s confidence and self-esteem.

While in Canada, Nancy taught Voice and Public Speaking at the University of Western Ontario’s Graduate School of Journalism, The Ivey School of Business, and St. Peter’s Seminary. In 1989 she started her own company, Communication Dynamics, for businesses and the general public.

Upon returning to the States in 1997, she opened her business under the name Voice Dynamic and from 1999 to 2003 continued to teach Voice & Diction and Public Speaking at the college level.

In addition to her guest speaking engagements, Nancy holds private, group, and corporate workshops throughout the United States and Canada.

For those unable to work with her directly, she is now offering Voicing It!, the only voice improvement course on video covering The Voice Dynamic Approach.

341. Does Your Voice Shake in Public Speaking? 5 Steps to Stop the Quiver
May 03, 2011

You are standing in front of an audience. Your knees and hands are shaking; your heart is pounding in your ears and in your cheeks; sweat has formed on your brow; your lips are quivering. If all of that isn’t bad enough, when you open your mouth to speak, the voice that results is quivering or sha...

342. Why You Hear Yourself Differently Than Everyone Else
May 01, 2011

If you can say to me that you hate your voice on your answering machine but you think you have a pretty good voice, then you truly don’t understand a basic fundamental about how you sound. The way in which you hear your own speaking voice is entirely different than how everyone else hears you. ...

343. Which Is More Important in Public Speaking - Your Voice, Your Face, or Your Body Language?
May 01, 2011

No one answer is correct. All three components of your delivery are equal in value because in normal conversation, most people make use of vocal variety in their voice, facial movement that adds to their expression as well as the use of their arms, their torso, and, their legs. The problem in publ...

344. Is It Good to 'Wing It' in Public Speaking?
May 01, 2011

If there is one thing I would never recommend for the novice in public speaking, it would be to ‘wing it’ or, in other words, to speak without note cards or some form of visual aid. You must have something to help keep you on track. If, however, you have been speaking about the same topic for many...

345. You Don't Have to Live with the Voice You Hear on Your Voicemail
April 28, 2011

Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on a recording? I do. The memory is seared into my mind. I was shocked. In fact, I was sure it was the fault of Sony and not of me!

When I was in graduate school a few years later, my singing professor showed me where my optimum speaking v...

346. Is Your Handshake Sending the Right Message?
April 28, 2011

Ah, the handshake. The handshake that is the 2nd or 3rd thing in which others will judge you. First in line is your visual image. What follows is often a handshake, your name, or both, as you introduce yourself.

Have you ever considered the importance of your handshake and the image it ...

347. Next Time You Give Your Personal Introduction, Why Not Stand Out From the Crowd?
April 27, 2011

Oh, how I dislike the business lunch or dinner meeting in which everyone must stand and introduce themselves. What we tend to hear, one after the other, is a name, a profession, and a place of business that becomes sing-song after the 1st introduction. Not only is it spoken in a lilt, but everyone...

348. Why Men Don't Listen
April 27, 2011

I am about to be politically incorrect. When you reach a certain point in life, however, you discover from experience that some generalizing is correct. From my many years teaching voice improvement, I have found that women tend to be more expressive in speaking. I have also discovered that women...

349. Constant Clearing of Your Throat May Be a Sign of Vocal Abuse
April 26, 2011

If you find that you are clearing your throat frequently when you speak, it may be a sign of vocal abuse. Ignoring it will not make the abuse go away because the process of talking is creating the problem. Therefore, the more you talk, the more you are irritating your throat and vocal folds (cords...

350. 3 Steps for Overcoming Breathlessness in Public Speaking
April 26, 2011

While fear of public speaking is the first major hurdle for many who must address an audience, breathlessness is most definitely the second. It is surprising how many people are affected by this easily remedied problem.

When you are talking to your friends, your family, your colleagues or e...
