Memorable Quote 1: Your voice speaks volumes about you - what is yours saying?

Memorable Quote 2: If you are not nervous in public speaking, then I am.

Author Comment / Biography:
The Voice Lady, Nancy Daniels, has been involved in voice training since 1977. A graduate of Gettysburg College with a BA in music, she discovered the techniques for improving the sound of the speaking voice while in graduate school at American University in Washington, D.C.

Prior to her move to Canada in 1981, Nancy worked for G. Schirmer, ICM Artists and the Aspen Music Festival where she was director of public relations. Aware that her own speaking voice was a predominant factor in obtaining employment with such reputable firms, she believes that a dynamic and mature-sounding voice is a fantastic asset, increasing one’s confidence and self-esteem.

While in Canada, Nancy taught Voice and Public Speaking at the University of Western Ontario’s Graduate School of Journalism, The Ivey School of Business, and St. Peter’s Seminary. In 1989 she started her own company, Communication Dynamics, for businesses and the general public.

Upon returning to the States in 1997, she opened her business under the name Voice Dynamic and from 1999 to 2003 continued to teach Voice & Diction and Public Speaking at the college level.

In addition to her guest speaking engagements, Nancy holds private, group, and corporate workshops throughout the United States and Canada.

For those unable to work with her directly, she is now offering Voicing It!, the only voice improvement course on video covering The Voice Dynamic Approach.

391. Your Individuality Is One of Your Greatest Strengths in Public Speaking
February 07, 2011

When clients tell me they want to be like Anthony Robbins or Zig Ziglar, my first question is why? Yes, I understand that they may want to be as famous or as rich or as talented, but why would they want to imitate either one of them?

While your audience would probably love to see Robbins...

392. In Public Speaking, Your Body Is Talking -- What Is Yours Saying?
February 01, 2011

Body language. It is a term we hear much about from articles, books, and the media. There is even a crime show, called Lie to Me, in which the main character specializes in interpreting the microexpressions and body language of others, cleverly changing his own body language to further unse...

393. Prolonged Yelling or Shouting Can Do Serious Damage to Your Vocal Folds and Throat
February 01, 2011

The Super Bowl is fast approaching and there is one result that I can predict: hoarseness and sore throats. Some may even experience loss of voice by the end of the night. This problem is known as vocal abuse and it can lead to serious problems for your speaking voice.

There are those who...

394. Treat Your Audience Like You're Having a Conversation in Your Living Room and Watch What Happens!
January 29, 2011

One of the great mistakes made in public speaking is trying to be someone or something that you are not. Your audience is not in attendance, giving of their time, to hear or watch you be something other than yourself. They came to hear you be you.

As a voice specialist, I have found that...

395. End Your Vocal Abuse Today Because It Will Only Get Worse Tomorrow
January 29, 2011

Unless you are suffering from allergies, vocal abuse is the overuse of the speaking voice and is more common than you may think. Rooting for your favorite team, teaching for 7-8 hours a day, providing training for your firm or company, or even yelling at your kids can result in vocal abuse. Howeve...

396. If Your Audience Is Moving, You've Got a Problem!
January 28, 2011

Dynamic speakers move and audiences do not. Less than dynamic speakers tend to stand, riveted to one spot which means that their audiences are moving. When that happens, you have lost them.

We tend to think of public speaking as something in which we must stand behind a lectern. If you ar...

397. There Is No Reason for Breathlessness in Public Speaking
January 28, 2011

One of the most common complaints I hear from my clients is that they run out of air in public speaking. This may be a problem for you as well. Do you know why this is happening? Many who teach public speaking will tell you it is because you are nervous. Certainly nervousness exacerbates the pro...

398. Your Nasal Voice Could Be a Stumbling Block to Your Success
January 26, 2011

Some of the adjectives that come to mind when I hear someone who has excessive nasality are whiny, strident, shrill, and grating. And, given the right volume, tone, and duration, it can lead some listeners to develop a headache.

Don’t laugh. It has been reported that the voice of Mary Hart...

399. When to Memorize (& When Not to) in Public Speaking
January 26, 2011

I am not an advocate of memorization in public speaking except for your opening and possibly your closing. Because the opening is the most difficult part of the delivery, I recommend memorizing the first 3-4 lines. If ever there was a time when I wanted you to be flawless and smooth, it is then. ...

400. Watch What Your Face Is (or Isn't) Saying in Public Speaking
January 24, 2011

Before your give your next presentation or speech, can I make a suggestion? Why don’t you video-record yourself, study the playback, and watch your facial expressions. Are they in line with what you are discussing? Does your face display enthusiasm if you are excited about your message? Does it ...
