1. Just How Old is Feng Shui Anyway?
October 20, 2013

Feng Shui is usually described as an ancient practice that is several thousand years old. And yet lately I have heard of at least two Chinese practitioners who are now saying it is not as old as people generally think it is. One man’s article on the Internet is even claiming that it is only about 70 years old! This is absurd of course, but a client recently brought his article to my attention. I could only assume it has a major typo in his article. Fact is, this mystical tradition is steeped so heavily in Chinese history and documented so well that there is no way a sane person could t... 2. Money Lock-People Lock Overlap in a Feng Shui Audit
September 20, 2013

In Xuan Kong Feng Shui we can identify different phases a house or building goes through and one circumstance is called the “Locked Phase.” Clients of mine are made aware of whether or not their property is in a long term or short term locked phase. And in every Update report the clients find out if their home or business will be in a “locked” phase for that year and what to do about it. Strictly speaking, the Money Lock is a period of time when the structure can undermine the occupants in their career and financial opportunities. For some it feels like stagnant energy when normally the... (read more)

3. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
September 09, 2013

When studying a branch of Feng Shui called Landscape School, we encounter the symbolism of the Tiger, Dragon, Phoenix and Turtle. What are these symbols representative of? They are symbolic of land forms around any given property, or the lack of these land forms which causes concern for some. If you were to stand in front of a house looking toward it, the house would need some kind of protection according to theories about chi flow. The proper collection of chi, as well as the proper disbursement of chi can be controlled with some surrounding land formations. In a modern context, this ... (read more)

4. Real Water Versus Virtual Water in Feng Shui Theory
September 08, 2013

Water, the universal solvent, is the “shui” of Feng Shui. Used for so many purposes, water is actually one of five elements used as a remedy in Five-Element-Theory. Usually when we need water as a remedy in a house, the more water used, the better the results can be. This is one reason why I steer clients away from tiny fountains that hardly hold any water. The average-sized room that needs water should have a gallon or more. The tiny fountains that only hold a cup or two of water may be cute, but not all that effective. Outside water features should contain many gallons of water and... (read more)

5. The Importance of Having an Accurate Floor Plan in A Feng Shui Analysis
September 07, 2013

It might seem obvious that a floor plan is needed to evaluate a space since Feng Shui deals with how people are affected by the architecture. And yet, many Feng Shui practitioners try to wing it and advise clients without a drawn floor plan to refer to. Firstly, we need to have a to-scale floor plan sketch in order to accurately divide up the areas into directional zones. We have mathematical rules about how to divide up the spaces. Since we use elements strategically in classical Feng Shui, it should be unthinkable to risk placing an element in the wrong area. And yet, some schools rel... (read more)

6. Feng Shui and Your Creative Potential
September 07, 2013

Everyone has more than one way to use their home to further enhance their creative potential. Every floor plan will have areas that are inherently conducive to creativity and each person will have their own personal directions to access as well. When we evaluate a house according to Xuan Kong Flying Star School, it reveals which areas of your home that can enhance the creative muse or attract luck in creative professions. Typically, these areas of your home are good for you if your medium is art, music, writing, or acting. But this same creative energy can extend to other professions and... (read more)

7. Feng Shui and the Sui Po Directions
September 07, 2013

The Sui Po Direction changes from year to year and it is always a direction which opposes the direction known as the Tai Sui direction for the year. For example, in 2011, the Year of the Rabbit is associated with east. And the direction that opposes east is west. That means that in 2011, the Sui Po direction is west, the Rooster sector. What does this mean in relation to Feng Shui? It means that the Rooster direction of west in 2011 is a very accident-prone direction. The whole range of west is from 247.5 to 292.5 degrees. The middle section of that is the Rooster Sector from 262.5-2... (read more)

8. What Is a Feng Shui Update?
September 05, 2013

There are several different major schools of Feng Shui. And the schools which take timing into consideration can reveal a lot more information about how the house or building can affect its occupants and when. Feng Shui is a predictive art, so we can corroborate all the influences and also project when certain circumstances or events will be most likely to occur. This includes annual cycles. For example, in Xuan Kong Flying Star School we can see if a house is prone to causing a certain illness for the occupant. When will the illness strike? It is very likely that when compounding an... 9. Date of Occupancy Versus Date of Construction in Feng Shui Theory
September 05, 2013

Most Xuan Kong Flying Star Schools teach that you can evaluate a house based on its compass orientation in conjunction with the year of Construction. The house then takes on a “Flying Star” chart and is associated with having been built in a certain Period. These different Period are twenty years in length. For example, a house built between 1944-1963 is a Period 5 house. The house is then remedied according to the energies it assumed at the time it was built. I have found this to be very predictably accurate and I have a fair amount of experience evaluating properties according to when... (read more)

10. Dodging a Bullet With a Feng Shui Technique
September 02, 2013

Classical Xuan Kong Feng Shui can be very accurate as a predictive art. When we factor in the time of construction and the magnetic compass reading of the property, unseen influences can be revealed and this includes events or circumstances which an occupant may encounter. For example, there is a certain type of energy that can exist in someone’s house which would predict a surgery. The flying star school then offers one or more remedies to avert this potential. It could involve an element remedy for the room in question and/or using the room less so that you simply won’t be as influence... (read more)

11. Teaching Feng Shui Backwards
August 31, 2013

There are different types of teachers and with different agendas. But many teachers sincerely want to have their students learn something practical right away. We also want students to learn how to make a change to their personal space that will work fast. Some of this is intended to help “sell” Feng Shui. We want our students to believe that Feng Shui really works, so we might try to give them something powerful right off the bat. It is actually hard to dispense anything more than general information to a classroom full of people who each have unique properties and unique circumstances th... (read more)

12. Sorting Through the Different Schools of Feng Shui
August 31, 2013

Just in the last twenty years or so, potential Feng Shui students have come across schools which identify themselves as “Traditional” or “Classical” versus some other schools, such as “western Feng Shui” or other clever descriptions. And some of these misnomers make it appear that if you are not studying the “modernized” versions of Feng Shui that somehow you will be lacking in the ability to discern and apply these ancient teachings in a modern context. Nothing could be further from the truth, so long as the consultant has had ample training in the traditional methodology. And that i... (read more)

13. Feng Shui and Wind Chimes
August 30, 2013

Aside from being a nice garden accessory, wind chimes have been used as actual Feng Shui remedies for a variety of reasons. And there is also one circumstance where they should absolutely NOT be used. As a moving metal remedy, wind chimes or bell strands can disperse negative energy when it is of a specific earth “sha.” The term “sha” can translate as harmful energy. In the cycle of the five elements, earth wants to nurture or become metal, so the metal chime can absorb the negative earth energy or transform it. I am not referring to Planet Earth when I note “earth” but rather a less ... (read more)

14. Organic Feng Shui In A Synthetic World
August 29, 2013

This is the first time I have paired the word “organic” with my area of expertise, but I’m having a realization about the way in which the modern day Feng Shui practitioner approaches their assessments and applications. In classical Xuan Kong Flying Star schools, understanding and use of Five-Element Theory is crucial. The Five Elements, sometimes referred to as the Five Phases or Transformations (because they are in state of relative flux and not stagnant), are categorized initially as Water, Wood, Fire, Earth, and Metal. These Elements can manifest in a number of ways and they can ... (read more)

15. Is Bad Feng Shui Contagious?
August 28, 2013

A client once expressed concern for the house she was buying because the seller’s adult grandchild had died, but not on the premises. Is it possible for someone’s house to have bad Feng Shui and then extend to family members who do not even live at that location? This is a plausible scenario, given that many other predictions like that can be made using the Xuan Kong Flying Star method. If we can determine when a person might have a certain problem, there is always a chance it could also affect someone who doesn’t live in the house. For example, if your house indicates a potential for... (read more)

16. The Role of Feng Shui Versus a Design Consultation
August 28, 2013

The media, as well as poorly trained practitioners and authors, have done such a good job of misinterpreting Feng Shui, that many clients end up totally confused about why they have hired a Feng Shui consultant. I have experienced this myself, as well as fellow consultants, where we are sitting with the client trying to explain the cosmological significance of their surroundings, and the client just wants to know what color drapes to install in their living room. As the mutual frustration mounts, the client reveals that they are on the verge of re-decorating or remodeling their home ... (read more)

17. What Is Yin House Feng Shui?
August 27, 2013

In popular culture, many people are vaguely familiar with the Yin-Yang Symbol and some of its attributes, such as the yin darker side of the symbol relating to the feminine principle and the yang lighter side of the symbol relating to the masculine principle. In virtually all schools of Feng Shui, there is exploration into the many manifestations of yin and yang aspects to our lives and surroundings. All of Chinese metaphysics and Chinese medicine relate to Yin-Yang Theory uniquely, with a lot of overlapping observations and conclusions. Within the field of Feng Shui, we can label sp... 18. The Mysteries of Water and Feng Shui
August 26, 2013

Much has been written about water in the scope of Feng Shui influences and yet the specific applications for water still elude the general public. This is because we have many theories in the Xuan Kong Flying Star School which need to be learned through actual training. Otherwise, someone might assume that a water feature, like a fountain or pond, is always a good asset to a property, which is actually not the case. In fact, someone could innocently place a water feature in an area that could attract crime or reduce the occupant’s financial potential. Every twenty Year Era as defined by... (read more)

19. The Real Feng Shui New Year
August 24, 2013

Much to my surprise, I have discovered more than one famous Feng Shui personality who has incorrectly perpetuated the wrong Feng Shui New Year date. Contrary to popular belief, the Feng Shui New Year is based on a Solar calendar, not the Lunar calendar. The Lunar calendar vacillates from year to year by weeks, sometimes occurring at the end of January and sometimes in February. Feng Shui enthusiasts sometimes assume that the New Year will begin according to the Lunar calendar, but there is no excuse for a Feng Shui professional to get this wrong. There is one form of Chinese Astro... (read more)

20. How To Choose the Best Color for a Room
August 21, 2013

Three times this week I had to de-brief clients who had gotten incorrect color advice for their homes either from the Internet or from a previous consultant. Naturally, it inspired this article where I will go over how a classical Feng Shui audit determines the best and worst colors to use. I should mention that many practitioners acknowledge that colors do not wield anywhere near the real power of actual elements. For example, blue and black color might resonate with the water element, but these colors can’t compete with real water when needed. There are also many practitioners who... (read more)

21. Genetically Modified Feng Shui
August 21, 2013

When I first started consulting in 1992, the only controversial discussions seemed to be about so-called traditional Feng Shui versus the New Age inventions, such as the BTB School which flourished in the 1990’s and with headquarters in Berkeley, California. And if I can begin with my metaphor, it has been pretty hard to top the BTB School for the “most-genetically modified” rendition of this greatly misunderstood metaphysical practice. The acronym “BTB” stands for a series of words that actually cannot be put next to each other in articles on the internet, without risk of the article being b... (read more)
