With the advances of technology through the years, mankind has grown almost dependent on computers to assist them in their every day needs. Think about the last time you went a full day without the aid of technology…it’s impossible to do, right? Unless you’re a hermit or are on a tech-cleanse somewhere deep in a Costa Rican rainforest, chances are your life would crumble to pieces if technology suddenly disappeared. What does this mean for news coverage? As of right now, news sites are littered with bias...human bias. Unbiased news sources are few and far in between. The news industry is one industry where computers have yet to completely take over. Reporters don’t have to worry about computers stealing their jobs…yet. That being said, the demand for more unbiased news sources is growing. People are becoming more and more aware of the effect that the media has on the news as a whole. In an industry where the news should take precedence, instead the media makes the news. The media decides what news story is important. Your opinion doesn’t matter. The news that you receive on a daily basis directly corresponds with the media’s bias on the matter. Unbiased news sources are hard to come by because we, as humans, naturally, have opinions. This has always been one of the biggest differences between humans and computers: humans can feel. Humans have minds of their own. Humans have different backgrounds and experiences. Because of these things, humans also have an incredible amount of bias. This is why you see so many news stations delivering the exact opposite of what an unbiased news source should deliver. We’re programmed to be biased. It’s in our DNA. Computers, however, are programmed to be factual. They are here to make our lives easier. They’re here to help solve problems, get us from point A to point B, etc. When it comes to unbiased news sources, computers might just be the answer. Is there a way to incorporate the unbiased, factual, filtering capabilities that computers provide with the delicate human touch that will create an unbiased news source without coming off as too robotic? Yes and that is exactly what News Lab is trying to accomplish. It’s possible to be unbiased when delivering the news. Where news outlets go wrong is that they put all of their faith in their reporters instead of leaning a little on something that they use to fulfill their other needs every single day: technology. Where many start-up, unbiased news sources go wrong is that they try to alienate all human emotion and reason when presenting the news. They stick to algorithms and formulas and allow their computers to spit out bland articles and facts. News Lab wants to go above and beyond that. By using computers to filter the daily news and extract just the facts, and then going in and having humans edit each article, you get the best of both worlds. Entertainment is still possible without bias. With News Lab you’ll get a true, unbiased news source. News Lab will offer just the facts, topped with a pinch of entertaining prose to keep your yawns at bay. Remember, unbiased news sources can still be entertaining. All it takes is a little creativity and a lot of teamwork amongst computers and their human counterparts.
