21. First Impressions of Siem Reap
September 25, 2013
I awake with a sore head but the pain is immediately softened by the elegant feel of my room with its polished, beautifully-crafted hardwood pillars and furniture. I make my way downstairs to be greeted by a buffet feast of hot and cold drinks, fruit, eggs, rice, ham, and even cheese (processed of course), and I sink into one of the regal looking dark thick wood chairs and tuck in.
As I slowly sip my coffee, which tastes of chocolate if I'm not very much mistaken, I notice a fruit I have never seen before, pink and crazy-looking on the outside, with a carnival-type extravagant pink-and... (read more)

22. Top 10 Things To Do In Bali
September 24, 2013
1 – Surfing
Many things may have changed in Bali over the last few years but the one constant is the surf. People flock to this island from all over the world just to surf, so you have to at least try it, especially in the made-to-measure 'beginner' waves you tend to get on Kuta Beach. There’s a few miles of sand lined with local surf instructors ready to set you on your way and, trust me, you’re never too old to start. If you want bigger and badder waves, you could always nip over to Balian Beach, an hour further west and join the big boys. Don’t be afraid.

23. First Night in Siem Reap
September 23, 2013
Outside the guesthouse a couple of tuk tuks lie dormant, inconspicuous. I walk around trying to find the drivers but my search proves fruitless, until I inch closer to the carriages and realize that both the drivers are asleep in the back, curled up and blending into the darkness. I reluctantly shake one of them up and he wakes up without any fuss, like cats when they go from snoring into action-mode in the blink of an eye. He immediately clambers to the front and we take off. Heading towards Pub Street. Siem Reap's bar central.
The driving is frenetic and the riding bumpy but the streets... (read more)

24. Epilogue So Far...
September 19, 2013
After a hellish journey trying to get off the island of Koh Chang I eventually boarded a minibus which transferred me onto a bigger bus heading for the Cambodian border. It was on here when my travels really began. As soon as I climbed aboard I sensed a change in atmosphere. It was the people.
From the minute I left the UK I’d been searching for some like-minded people, explorers and adventurers, open-minded and independent-thinking, the same people that I had met many years ago on my previous travels, but instead I found cloned tourists that didn’t really want to be there. The traveling ... (read more)

25. Arriving in Siem Reap...
September 19, 2013
The bus journey itself is pretty quiet but as I look around I can already see the difference between this and my previous bus trips. There are not too many backpacking party kids on this trip, and the atmosphere is lighter, more relaxed, people are just enjoying the ride and not so focused at showing the rest of the world how cool and unaffected they are.
We stop at a restaurant for a quick break and I spot a man who seems to know what he’s doing, noting the fact that he’s only traveling with a purse-like bag which means that he’s probably on a border run to extend his visa. He’s an Ame... (read more)
