Traveling List

Writing
There are questions we ask ourselves or open up with in a gaggle of friends so that you can try and break the ice. "If you were stranded on a deserted island, what one item would you have with you?" Most often people answer with survival items like matches, a radio, a tent, etc. Still, some choose a luxury item like a pillow, a toothbrush or beer. It doesn't matter what the answer, the reasoning behind in most cases a bit enlightening into how a person thinks or rationalizes. Are they practical, picking something like a knife, or are they much more eccentric, choosing an item like a tambourine? To be certain, a lot goes about what one item a person wouldn't want to live without.

Luckily, the probability of actually being stranded on a deserted island are slim to none. However, we still have to face the choice of what items to bring with us as we travel. And we can all empathize with the traveler who realizes they've left behind a vital item - moments before they're boarding a plane, and it's too late to go back and get it.

So, what items should you never, ever travel without and how may you always always pack them? To begin with, if you're a frequent traveler for pleasure or business, it usually is convenient and worth the little bit extra to keep an extra set of essential items in a travel case. This will eliminate the advantages of constant packing and unpacking and reduce the risk that you'll forget one of these brilliant items. After all, there's nothing worse than getting to the hotel room and realizing you've left the shaving cream at home - hello razor burn!

For the frequent flyer, select a clear tote or case that will help you to pack travel sized portions of all your essentials. Using a clear case and limiting your items to travel sized things will help you to throw the case in your carry on bag and avoid having to check a bag because you've packed 24 oz of shampoo.

Frequent travelers and the occasional adventurer can all use this next tip. Create a list. Yes, it's that simple. Find a sticky pad, notepad or scratch paper and jot down all the small items that are absolutely essential. Some items may be:

Cell phone charger

Digital camera

Extra batteries for the camera

Medication (prescriptions)

Medication (OTC such as headache or heartburn - traveling can sometimes throw off your digestion)

Chewing gum (to avoid ear pain when flying in high altitudes)

Sunscreen

Sewing kit

Glasses

Book

Mp3 player (and charger)

Portable gaming (like a DS or gameboy)

Hand sanitizer

Light jacket

Toiletries - shower items, deodorant, toothbrush, makeup, etc.

Grooming items - hair dryers, irons, comb, etc.

If one makes a detailed list of all the so-called items you need, and cross them off only after you've packed them into your bag, you'll be sure to get everything. Having a list and seeing it completely marked off can also ease the anxiety of feeling like you have left something behind.

In case you are packing in excess of yourself, have your spouse or child record or tell you a few of the items they need to make sure to have with them. If your kid wants to experience a toy or item, it is best to write it on a list than have an upset kid later when they insist on going back for the item.

By planning ahead or keeping a bag ready to go, you will be sure a person always has solutions for a comfortable trip and enjoyable time.
