There are a few principles you will want to get a handle on if you really want to be a Social City master: Principle #1: It’s a game. This fact might seem obvious, but recognizing that Social City is a game is a necessary initial step towards awesome results. Like most games, Social City has rules. For instance, everything has to be placed on a grid square in this game. You might not have thought about that rule because it’s so implicit in the game. Social City is filled with rules such as this that people may or may not have actively recognized. This is significant: Most of these rules bear only a passing resemblance to the real world. Commonly in the real world buildings are put on funny shaped lots, streets curve around neighborhoods and sections of a city aren't square. Okay, I know what you’re thinking: Why am I telling you this? If you play Social City ready for it all to work like real life, you'll be disappointed. But wait, this isn’t all bad. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t earn $100,000 every day - you can in Social City. In addition, I am not entrusted with city planning, but I am in Social City. Now that you have this in mind, let’s move on to... Principle #2: Priorities determine results. Whether you’re conscious of this or not, your priorities determine your results. What you most want from a game determines the way you play that game. Those who are determined to succeed at all costs look quite different from those simply trying to make friends and enjoy playing. Don't forget, often this isn’t your conscious choice. You might not know the underlying reason for the way you play the game. Don’t fret, there’s no right way to play Social City. But you should determine what you want out of the game before you start playing. Or in the much more likely scenario that you’re already playing, take time to decide on your priorities before continuing. For instance, you could decide you simply want to have a attractive city in which the population is happy. Congratulations! In that case, you don’t need to worry about specific strategies. Just have fun and figure it out as you go along. Perhaps you want to get to a high level quickly or have more people in your city than several of your friends. That’s awesome, too. However, you’ll want to create a system that lets you maximize your efforts in order to make that happen. No matter what, the articles on this site will help you achieve your goals. That leads us to... Principle #3: Have a goal. It is my opinion that virtually anything in life is more rewarding when you've got a goal. Games are activities devoted to enjoyment and most of them have goals: Halo - shoot the aliens and stay alive; Monopoly - bankrupt other people by charging them more and more money; Harry Potter video games - wave your wand in the right way to cast the spells to advance through the storyline; You get the idea. Games have goals - that’s the way you know when you win. Social City is a different style of game, however. Growing your city seems to be the goal, but how do you know if you’re done? In order to make the game more enjoyable, I suggest adding goals of your own. Your goal could be to get a specific number of people in your city, to attain a particular level, to recreate your favorite real life city in the virtual world of Social City or something else . Here’s my example: My goal is to reach Level 40 in 30 days of playing the game. I also want to spend only an hour a day to do it. That’s right, I’m going to be working on my goal right along with you! Anyway, regardless of what your goal is, the thing is to have one. From there it is possible to focus on what must be done to make your goal happen and relish the excitement of reaching it. Recap (or the super-fast version) Here’s a summary to help you remember these ideas: - Principle #1: It’s a game - Social City doesn’t adhere to the rules of the real world. Study the Social City rules and play by them. (Don’t worry, I’ll help.)
- Principle #2: Priorities determine results - Sort out your priorities in order to focus on achieving them without distraction.
- Principle #3: Have a goal - Turn those priorities into particular goals to make your game play more satisfying.
