Jalpaiguri got its name from the olive fruit, which is locally known as ‘jalpai’ and it actually means a place where olives are found profusely. Its name is also related with Lord Shiva who is also known as Jalpesh, the commanding divinity of the region. Jalpaiguri shares the northern part of West Bengal and is near to international borders with Bhutan in the north and Bangladesh in the south. Every year in the Hindu calendar month of sawan that is between 15 July to 5 August thousands of devotees plung the Jalpesh Temple and a large fair is organized for a month. Deities collect water in vessels from the river Teesta after offering puja and walk barefoot towards the temple, which is nearly about 15 km from the river.
