A Spiritual Odyssey to Shirdi

Travel & Tourism
Year after year, countless devotees meticulously plan their Shirdi trip to seek the Sai Baba’s blessings. This small town in Maharashtra is famous throughout the world amongst Sai Baba’s devotees. In fact, along with Nashik, Shirdi is easily one of the two holiest places in Maharashtra. A Shirdi yatra gives you the chance to visit euphoria inducing pious places such as Sai Baba Temple, Dwarakamayi, Khandoba Raya temple, and Chavadi. Come, let’s get better acquainted with this pious place.

Sai Baba Temple

All Shirdi travel is synonymous with a visit to the Sai Baba Temple. This is the final resting place of the great Sai Baba and massive crowds of devotees throng here for darshan. In fact, the temple stays open from 4am to 10pm and one usually has to wait in queue for at least an hour to get a turn. On weekends, waiting times often go up to 2 hours. One hardly gets to spend a few short minutes at the samadhi site.

Dwarakamayi

Visiting Dwarakamayi is another reward of planning a travel to Shirdi. This is a mosque, which served as home to Sai Baba for more than 50 years. Sai Baba lit a holy fire here some 100 years back, which he never allowed to burn out. After his death, his devotees have been loyally carrying forth the tradition. One can also see some of the personal effects of the Baba such as his grinding stone and the stone he used as his seat. It goes without saying that Dwarakamayi should definitely be a part of one’s trip planner to Shirdi.

Chavadi

Probably one of the lesser known of Shirdi tourist places, Chavadi is not even a stone’s throw away from Dwarakamayi. The Baba slept here every alternate day. It is best to visit Chavadi on Thursday nights, when devotees take out a ceremonial procession by carrying the footprints of the Baba from Dwarakamayi to Chavadi.

Khandoba Raya temple

This is another celebrated Shirdi Temple and commands an impressive following. This is the temple where Sai Baba was first welcomed by Mahalsapati and the latter realised that Sai Baba was a divine entity and not some simple fakir. Quite a few devotees fix their tour planner for Shirdi with Khandoba Raya temple in mind.

Reaching Shirdi from Mumbai

Now the question is how to reach Shirdi? Well, depending upon your location, you can can come down to Mumbai and plan further travel. Shirdi is some 250 km from Mumbai and both the places are well connected by trains and buses. By road, it takes about 5 hours and bus fares usually start at about INR 160.

Tourist places around Shirdi

Nashik is another of the popular religious tourist places near Shirdi. The distance between Nashik and Shirdi works out to be hardly 86 km by road, while the duration of the journey is usually less than two hours. The average fare for a Shirdi to Nashik bus is about INR 300. Some of the must visit places at Nashik include Sita Gufa, Mineral Museum, and Panchavati. For detailed driving directions, there are plenty of online Shirdi to Nashik route maps that provide adequate information.

There are quite a few other tourist places around Shirdi but Nashik is easily one of the most important places from a religious point of view. In fact, the holy ancient city of Nashik counts amongst the holiest Hindu cities across the world and is the site of the Kumbh Mela celebrations every 12 years. In fact, it may not be an exaggeration to say that Nashik and Shirdi tourism together account for a significant part of religious tourism in Maharashtra. Hopefully, this Shirdi trip guide will help travellers in planning out their tour itinerary.
