If you have multiple cables and wires running from the power source to different electronics and communications devices, a simple and inexpensive way to manage them is to use nylon zip ties or cable ties. These are also known as wire fasteners or tie-wrappers. The tie fastens by forming a loop on itself which cannot be removed unless you cut the tie or flatten its teeth. One end has a serrated edge, and the other has a small ratchet with a small eyelet-type opening. The pull-through end is finished with a finger-grip which is usually square-shaped. When the serrated edge is pulled through the opening, the ratchet locks it in place. The loose end may be angled or rounded to avoid injuries. They have been around since the early 50s, and were initially used to secure wire-harnessing on aircraft. The serrated edge was originally made of metal but was later changed to plastic. The functional aspects of zip ties was also expanded to include fastenings for outdoor scaffolding, tarps and in food and food-retail industries, supermarkets, etc. with specialized additives like metallic compounds to the nylon to make the ties sensitive to metal detectors. In some places, zip ties have even found use as emergency handcuffs. Since they fasten so securely, in some police stations and in the army in the US, they may be used as temporary restraints. Another great use for zip ties is when they're used to prevent your automobile tire hub-caps from dropping off when the vehicle is being driven. They can be fastened to the wheel rims and this makes an excellent, cost-savings solution to the problem of loose hub-caps. Zip ties are not re-usable, though the loop can be removed by loosening and pulling out the serrated edge from the toothed portion. However, since they're generally considered to be use and throw fasteners, not many people want to spend the time and effort in unfastening them. They're simply cut to open the bag. They're also used to bundle wires, flowers, thin vegetables or herbs in supermarkets. Their advantage over conventional string or rubber-bands is that they remain loose enough not to cut through the stems, but keep the bunch securely in place without slipping or sliding off. Nylon zip ties used in electrical and electronics applications to organize wires and cables are generally the clear, transparent type. Specialized zip ties are used by auto mechanics, maintenance/repair staff, home-owners, office-maintenance staff, artists or people pursuing hobbies. For certain applications like fastening insulation wires, etc, customized smaller-sized nylon zip ties are available. For applications requiring color-coding, nylon zip ties are available in a variety of colors. It is important to choose a good manufacturer so that the colors don't fade or change, quality material is used and a good price is also offered.
