Kurseong is a small hill station located in the Darjeeling district in the state of West Bengal. It is calm hilly town admiringly located in the majestic Himalayan Valleys. It is quite well explored by the tourists specially in summer season. The place is 50 km far from Siliguri and 30 km from Darjeeling, the queen of Hill station. This place offers a relaxing atmosphere and eye soothing beauty that makes this place a summer retreat for the neighboring people of the plane. It is a perfect hideout of the bustle life. Based on etymology, Kurseong has got its name from the Nepali word, 'Kharshang' means dawn's pole star. This tiny hill station was dominated by the kingdom of Sikkim before. In 1835 it was annexed with the British India. In 1880 this place became a prominent tourist destination for its salubrious weather and tranquil beauty. It is regarded as the paradise of nature lovers as its enchanting beauty is well spread in its eye feasting tea gardens, orchid nurseries, and lush green ravines. This place bears a spiritual value as this place dotted with many religious shrines like Gidapahar Durga Mata Mandir, Ambhotia Shiva Temple and Jadgish Mandir. Among them Jagdish Temple is an old shrine which dates back to 300 years ago. It is devoted to Lord Jaganath. The place is landscaped with several Buddhist Temples which are worthy to visit. The Buddhist Gompas is the most visited places along with The St Paul’s Church. The place offers a exquisite asset along with the natural sparkling waterfalls. The Kholas Waterfall is famous with its enticing natural beauty. Deer Park and Eagles Craig and the old museum dedicated to freedom fighter Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and it is well mentioned as it boasts of few rare photographs and letters. English, Gorkha, Bengali & Hindi are some well spoken language of this peaceful city. Bagdogra Airport is the nearest airport of this place. The New Jailpaiguri station is the closest rail head. From there the destined place is accessible by jeeps and buses. By road this place is well connected with the neighbor places like Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the major places of Sikkim. Kurseong experiences a pleasant climate throughout the year. Summer is the best time to visit this place. The place is highly appreciated for its films, fine arts. Society of Contemporary Artists were formed in Bengal and once it dominated the art scene in India. Once it was the place of several social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Ray, Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, and Swami Vivekananda and due to their invigorative of involvements sati, dowry, and caste-based discrimination or untouchability were abolished. Bengali cuisine needs special mention as it is world famous for some delectable ethnic dishes. 'Machhe Bhate Bangali' idoms is well significant as fish and rice are the staple food. Macher Jhol or Fish curry, Rasogolla and Misti doi are well regarded along with some traditional sweet items like Pitha (a kind of sweet cake), coconut-naru, til-naru, moa, payesh.
