Mathura - City of Gods

Travel & Tourism
The word ‘Brij’, normally refers to the Mathura District and nearby regions. In Vedic Literature, it signifies farms and farm animals. The Ramayana, Mahabharat and other literature of the same era, also refer to ‘Braj’ in the same context. ‘Braj’ has been frequently referred to as a ‘place’ in the Puranas, which scholars believe as a reference of Gokul. ‘Brij’ became a part of spoken language during the Bhakti Movement. Braj Bhoomi is located in Mathura city is located at a distance of 145 km south-east of Delhi and 58 km north-west of Agra. Braj Bhoomi, a small place on the bank of river Yamuna, which is Known as the land where Lord Krishna was born and spent his youth, Braj Bhoomi has little towns and hamlets that are still alive with the Krishna. All round the year a large number of festival and fairs are held in Braj Bhoomi and in Matura and adjoining areas of Vrindavan Gokul, Barsana, Nandgayon, Mant and Goverdhan. This place is known as the most culturally vibrant and heritage region of Vaishnavas, Hindus, Indians and mankind on the whole. Since Mathura is the holy abode of lord Krishna, city’s festivals unravels Krishna’s life from his childhood to adulthood. Braj Bhoommi is a region of heritage. The 1000 ancient water retention tanks (kunds) is an example of rain water harvesting system of that era. Shree Krishna Janam stahaan (Krishna Janmabhoomi Temple) is the most attractive place to see. The holy temple is approximately 8-10 kms from railway station & 5-7 kms from main bus station. Shri Baanke Bihari ji temple is another heritage place in Brai bhoomi. This temple is situated in the heart of Vrindavan, almost 15 km from Mathura. Another must see temple of the place is Shri Dwarika dhish temple. It is situated in the heart of city mathura, 5-7 km away from railway station and bus stand. Gokul, 16 km from Mathura, attracts tourists and pilgrims from all over India as Krishna grew up here under the care of his foster parents, Nanda and Yashoda. The most notable structure in Gokul is the Chaurasi Khamba (84 pillars). It is also known as Nand Maharaja's house. Brahmand Ghat is next must see place in Braj bhoomi, where Yashoda witnessed the entire universe in Krishna's mouth, when she chastised him for eating mud. The Govardhan Hill is about 40 km from Mathura and a temple constructed by saint vallabhacharya in 1520 attracts lot of tourists here. Nearly 4,000 temples spread on a 10 km stretch can be found in Vrindavan, 15 km from Mathura. This place was known as the favorite romantic haunt of the lord Krishna and Radha. British called Mathura as Muttara and the Greeks gave it the name Modoura, the literal meaning of the word is ‘city of gods’, a sobriquet well suited to its serene ambiance.
