Known as the ‘Golden City,’ Jaisalmer is one of the best places in India. Located in Rajasthan, this is a princely state having various enthralling forts. Situated in the heart of the Thar Desert, this city is home to around 78000 people. It was named after Rao Jaisal Yadav who was the founder and the king of Jaisalmer. This city has yellow sand which is why it is called the ‘Golden City.’ Yellow sand gives a yellowish golden tinge to Jaisalmer and the surrounding areas. You can visit the following places during your Jaisalmer or Rajasthan trip. • The Jaisalmer Fort This fort was built in the 1156 on the Trikuta hill. Built by the Bhati ruler Jaisal, this fort features a major attraction called the Rajmahal. The Jaisalmer Fort has inspired various writers, poets and film directors because of its beauty. A popular film director Satyajit Ray wrote a detective novel on this Fort. This novel later became the base of his movie named ‘Sonar kella’ meaning the Golden Fort. This fort features the temples of Laxminath. It also has various Jain temples. The walls of this fort are painted in lion color which turns to honey-gold when the sun sets. • Havelis You can visit various mesmerizing Havelis of Jaisalmer. You can check out the very popular ‘Salam Singh ki Haveli’. This Haveli was built by Salam Singh in the year 1815. Salam Singh was the prime minister of Jaisalmer when he built this Haveli. It has arched roofs decorated with peacock formed brackets. These roofs draw attention of each and every person who visits this Haveli. Don’t forget to visit the Patwo ki Haveli during your Jaisalmer tour. This is the largest and most attractive Haveli of Jaisalmer. It took total 50 years to complete this five story complex. This haveli was built by a rich merchant and his five sons. The merchants’s name was Guman Chand Patwa. Jaisalmer also allows you to enjoy the enchanting beauty of Nathmalji ki Haveli. Built by a Prime Minister named Nath Singh, this Haveli is decorated with beautiful ornamentation of birds, flowers, elephants, soldiers, a steam engine and a bicycle. One more famous Haveli of Jaisalmer is the Shreenath ji ki Haveli. Built in 15th century, this Haveli was built by the Vyas family and their descendants. The descendants of this family still live in this Haveli. The Haveli Shreenath Palace has five rooms which are available for people who want to stay in it.
