Does the law of attraction really work, or is it a waste of time and energy?

Spiritual,Self Improvement,Advice
Certainly, many “down-to-earth” people would laugh at the concept of the law of attraction. Isn’t science and hard facts the way forward? The law of attraction is not proven to exist, so isn’t hard work the only way to achieve abundance? Were those people who have success stories to tell and attribute them to the law of attraction, just lucky?

This is how I would have reacted to the theory of the law of attraction a few years ago, I did not believe in anything that I could not see, touch or feel and that was not proven by science. That included god, of course.

I have changed a lot since then. It was only about two years ago, that I realised that I actually needed more spirituality in my life. I had reached a point in my life where traditional self-help books did not help and I lost belief in them.

Then I came across the law of attraction. Naturally a sceptic, I read a number of books on the subject. What changed my mind was the fact that I found that the behaviour one has to adopt to work with the law of attraction actually corresponded with many psychological studies, and that no matter what you believe it can only help.

Behaviours and habits that you have to adopt if you want to reap the benefits of the law of attraction include:

1. Know what you want Surely you will agree that the most successful people know what they want before they take any action. For quite a while I felt adrift, wasn’t able to actually pinpoint what I wanted in life. My view was fuzzy and some of the dreams that I may have had felt unrealistic. Deciding what you want in life is not necessarily easy and requires a bit of soul-searching. However, I hope that you see how this pillar of the law of attraction is crucial, whether you are spiritual or not.

2. Positive Thinking and Feeling The more positive we are in life the more we are likely to achieve what we want and therefore be happier. This is a proven fact, shown in countless studies by psychologists. Positive people are more open-minded and, therefore, more able to spot opportunities in life which in turn help manifest dreams and desires.

3. Gratitude Gratitude can also be viewed as a tool to feel better and be more positive. Too many people, the author included, tend to moan about what life throws at them and don’t pay attention to what they have. You may have heard about people who survived the most gruesome accidents or diseases and whose lives have been transformed by their experience. These people suddenly found gratitude for being alive and have found new meaning in life. Are you grateful for your health, your family etc? Maybe you are going through rough times (e.g. having lost your job, like the author...) and cannot see beyond this new situation. What if you were diagnosed with cancer tomorrow or your partner left you? Would you not regret having been grateful despite your current situation (being without a job)?

Gratitude is one of the key tools to happiness and you can build a habit of being grateful: a number of personal development teachers recommend that you start the day by going through all the things that you are truly grateful for. You want to feel the gratitude deeply within you, not just list them in your head. If you do, according to the law of attraction, you will attract more of the same into your life. Again, if you think that the law of attraction is hocus-pocus, I think that you will agree that developing an “attitude of gratitude” can only benefit you.

4. Giving Again, this behaviour can be viewed as a tool to feel good. It has been proven that people feel better when they give rather than receive. There are countless psychological studies that confirm this notion. However, one of my favourite examples of this is the Benjamin Franklin effect, which states that: “A person who has done someone a favour is more likely to do that person another favour than they would be if they had received a favour from that person” (check out Wikipedia for the full story - it’s worth it).

The law of attraction twist here is that you should not give to expect. Give and help freely, but don’t do this because you want something in return, the return will happen automatically and probably unexpectedly and, quite possibly from another source than the one that you gave to.

5. Believe Now, this one might be a tad difficult for non-spiritual people to swallow. You have to train yourself to believe that the universe is good and that your thoughts and feelings will help you attract what you want. A good way to start to believe is by looking for all the good things that the universe is serving you up. As mentioned above, I lost my job a few months ago. It was a blow to the ego, no doubt, and also left me worrying about my future. However, it also allowed me to pursue projects that I have never had the time to work on while I was employed. I have also spent some quality time with my family, got fit and ran a marathon and have launched a few new websites. Also, I am convinced that the universe will help me find a job that is a lot better than my previous one, so I strongly believe that the universe is benevolent.

Conclusion You may have trouble accepting that the law of attraction exists and that you can make it work for you. My point in this article and on my blog is that all the behaviours and habits that law of attraction gurus want you to adopt will increase the quality of your life and help you get what you want. Spiritual or not, try to live by the principles of the law of attraction see for yourself if they are beneficial.
