We’ve come a long way from our Puritan past, especially with regards to sexuality. The group of early English Protestants promoted a rigid form of sexual morality that still affects us today. Generations of Americans were taught that sex was either dirty or sinful or both. It wasn’t until the 1950s that we discovered most folks don’t think that way. America may have been a sexually-repressed nation at the time, but only because most people didn’t talk about sex. The Kinsey Reports aired our collective dirty laundry. Like hunger, sleep, and personal safety, sexuality is a basic human drive that most people feel they must express. Celibacy has fallen out fashion in the modern world. And it isn’t because we’re all sinners or perverts! Most Americans now agree that sexual repression is more pernicious than sexual expression. In fact, sexual expression is now seen as a healthy and salubrious activity. Instead of feeling guilt or shame for succumbing to their natural sexual impulses, most people happily engage in them. And they are better for it! A healthy sex life is an important part of human happiness. According to most experts, people who have safe and satisfying sex are more likely to be emotionally secure and physically healthy. In other words, sexual repression is not good for us, but expression is! Human sexuality is such a curious and mysterious thing that it takes most of us years to figure out what we really like, what turns us on. One of the things Dr. Kinsey discovered is the homosexual relationships are far more common than anyone expected. It truly was the love that dare not speak its name. Even Americas who do not consider themselves gay have had sexual relationships with members of the same sex. Once again, it’s all about sexual expression and discovery. Forgive us for getting overly existential, but it is our opinion that people can only be truly whole if they discover what they like in the bedroom. If they repress their natural sexual urges, they will inevitably end up dissatisfied with their lives. They may not know what the problem is, but it will always needle at them.
