If your constantly wondering, "Why is my computer so slow?", here are 5 reasons why and what you can do to instantly speed up your computer. 1. Unnecessary Bundled Programs and Services Lots of computers come pre-installed with software trials and services that you probably don't need. For the best performance possible, it's best to uninstall any programs you don't need or use. To uninstall programs using any version of Windows, launch "My Computer" and click on "uninstall or change programs" or "add and/or replace programs". You can also sort this list of programs by their "Size", so that you can uninstall unnecessary programs that are consuming the most memory first. 2. Malware (Viruses, Spyware, Adware, Trojans, etc.) Every computer is vulnerable to all kinds of malware and malicious attacks especially if you frequently browse and/or download from the internet. If you have never installed a security/antivirus program on your computer, you may be in some trouble. If you suspect your computer is infected with malware, it's crucial that you install a security program and run a malware scan. There are tons of security software options for your computer such as Microsoft Security Essentials, which offers basic free real-time for your computer. 3. Startup Programs and Services If you find yourself exiting out of tons of random windows as soon as your computer boots up, it may be time to monitor the list of startup programs on your computer. To see the startup list, use the keyboard shortcut "Windows key + R", type in "msconfig" and hit Enter. Under the "Startup" tab at the top you can uncheck any item in this list you find unnecessary to eliminate it from running as soon as your computer turns on. Keep in mind, unchecking a program or service from this list does not uninstall it, but only prevents it from launching when your computer first boots up. 4. Too Many Open Windows or Programs Sometimes if you happen to be running serval high memory usage programs at once, you may have to close some down to give your computer a breather. If your mouse appears to be jumping around the screen rather then moving normally, this may be the case as your computer's processor is out of memory and maxing out.. To prevent this problem in the future you can upgrade the RAM on your computer, according to the maximum RAM limit for your system type. 5. Low Disk Space For optimal performance, it's best to leave some free memory on the hard drive. If your hard drive is running low on space, the performance will definitely be effected. The best way to free up space on your hard drive is to uninstall unnecessary programs (step # 1), delete large unnecessary files and to run the Disc Cleanup tool within Windows. To run the Disc Cleanup tool, launch the Start menu and navigate to All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disc Cleanup. This tool will scan your computer and remove temporary files that are hidden throughout your system. There are plenty of more factors that may be slowing down your computer, and the five factors listed in this article are definitely not the only things that can slow down your computer. In order to speed up your computer yourself, you'll need to first properly identify the problem. The next time you wonder "Why is my computer so slow?", one of the first things I recommend to do is run a full system scan to elminate any hidden malware that may be infecting your computer.
