You need a significant comfort level under the water and you don't want to jeopardize it with ill-fitting mask or fins. Once you have more dives under your belt, the equipment gets more expensive but more necessary. Obviously, a wet or dry suit will add to your comfort while a dive computer and regulators will help expand your abilities.
