SAS is statistical analysis software, that which allows the programmers to write new coding or edit an existing coding part to extract, manage, edit and to generate the data into a standard report. These reports can be submitted to the regulatory authorities for further approvals of the data. Enhance editor window is a window in the SAS software that allows the SAS programmers to write new codes to do different types of functions on the data, that is accessing a database, extraction of data, management, converting into small structured files, analyzing the data into statistical or graphical way of representing the data. There are different kinds of options to perform different operations on the data. Some of the options of the editor window are: Opening Files: Within the file menu, by clicking on the open option, a dialog box opens, which will allow the SAS programmer to access the data in the SAS environment. This will default look for files with a “.SAS” as extension. There is also an option to open the file in to the SAS environment, which is drag and drop option, that is from the source location a file can be dragged into the enhance editor window which will open the file in the enhancer editor window. While opening a file in the SAS environment, if the file has lines longer than 256 characters, then the lines will be truncated. However to avoid this, one can use the INCLUDE command with an LRECL value equal to the number of characters in the longest line, and programmers can set that either to AUTOWRAP or AUTOFLOW command to ON so that it fits into a single page. Moving the insertion point: As in the other windows application the insertion pointer functions the same way in the SAS environment, to move the insertion pointer in SAS editor window keys like arrow keys, page Up, page Down are used. Pressing the CTRL key with the left arrow or right arrow (moves the pointer to the left or right of the word) causes the insertion point to move across one word at a time. Insertion pointer can be moved to the top of a file by pressing CTRL + Page Up or to the bottom of a page by pressing CTRL + Page down keys. Clicking the Home key causes the insertion point to go to the beginning of the current line. Selecting Text: Text can be selected within the editor window by using the mouse or the SHIFT key in combination with the arrow keys or mouse button. The marking of an area of text continues until mouse button or arrow key is released or release the SHIFT key. To select all of the text in the active window, select the Edit menu and then click on select all. There are some advanced text selection methods which will provide more selection options in the editor window like double-clicking a single word to select it. To select an entire line, hold down the CTRL key and click on the line that need to be selected. If mouse is used to select the text then holding down the ALT key and holding the mouse button, drag the mouse to select a rectangular block (or column) of text. Saving programming code: To save the contents of the program editor window, click on the save toolbar button or on the diskette icon, the file can be saved. If the file is to be saved for the first time, then “save as” dialog box will be automatically opened to specify the new file name. To save a file with a new name: within the file menu, click on the “save as” option, which will allow the user to select a specific folder in a particular location, then under the file name field, name of the file has to be specified, and the type of the file can also be saved in the save as type field. Then the file can be saved as a new file. Conclusion: SAS editor window allows the programmers to write their programming code, manage the code in the editor window, save the programming code in the specific location with different file types and allows for submitting the code for a report generation within the SAS environment.
