The good the bad and the ugly -Insurance companies |

Some insurance companies(only the small good ones) are good and do their thing with a great deal of pride and honor. This is not the case for most all of the mainstream insurance companies. They have agents that steal work from shops by what is called "steering" and they have adjusters that try, and usually succeed, at telling how much will be paid for work at their discretion even though there are standard list prices and hours established.Even those essential tools have been corrupted by insurance companies to the extent of adjusting aftermarket list prices in their favor by "working" with the aftermarket pricing publishers. They also have justified the what they call "the fair competitive price" by getting service providers to do work cheap in an area and then call it the norm for the area. And each insurance company pays very different for the same work according to the area and insurance company descretion(through what they call "tier pricing". They also lobby for laws to pass that enable third party companies to "handle" claims. In some cases these third party companies or "networks" make a spread on the price paid to the service provider versus the the price actually paid by the insurance company, instead of that spread going into insured's pockets. During claim processes, if a service provider is not on their "list", insurance companies will try to say that the provider chosen will not be part of the insurance company offered warranty or that the service provider chosen may charge the customer more than what is offered by the insurance company and the customer may have to pay any difference, essentially scaring the insured customer into making sure they go with the insurance company's chosen provider. As far as agents go it is tough to say that most have been corrupted by greed and will try to get a customer to go to the shop that gives them a kick-back even if the customer has already chosen a shop. Worse yet, it doesn't even matter to some agents if the shop chosen is actually part of the network "list" or considered an "approved service provider" if it is not one of the shops that give them a kick-back, such actions are completely illegal. Complaints to the state commissioners office by shops end up having the insurance company in question simply denying all allegations. Small shops usually don't have the time or the resources to pursue these ruthless actions by insurance companies. The industries involved include auto glass and windshield insurance, auto body insurance, and fleet insurance providers and I'm sure in many ways health and many other industries. The solution would be that first and foremost, capitalism and government should be separated at all levels not just regarding lobbying. Calling "money is speech" is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard of. Then I should be able to steal money and it be called what exactly, stealing speech? And why can't I bribe a cop to get out of a traffic ticket if it is just speech? Second, it should be mandatory that no insurance company be able to suggest any service provider at all or affiliate with any service provider. All customers should have to find and choose a service provider. Third and final step, list prices and hours should be adjusted to be fair to all(currently most pricing doesn't make any sense at all and hours are even more ridiculous, they may offer 1.0 hrs to do a Volkswagon door glass that actually takes close to 3hrs because they obviously don't consider that yes, the glass if not broken in the first place is easy to remove and install, yet when you also have to completely dismantle the door insides to clean the glass, then 1.0 hrs doesn't add up to being a proper rate) and then such pricing should be able to be billed in accordance to the service provider's discretion within the fair list and hours provided. -Sam Tezel for awautoglass.com
