Ski Holiday Basics: Don’t Leave Home Without Them

Advice,Sports,Travel & Tourism
With everything full steam ahead for winter holidays it’s time to start the preparations! For regular skiers the packing list is probably a no-brainer, but if you’re heading off on your first ski holiday you might be wondering what to take, what to leave and what you might have to buy beforehand.

Of course your first decision will be where to go, but if you’ve chosen to stay in one of the excellent catered ski chalets La Plagne has to offer, you can rest assured everything will be taken care of, aside from your personal requirements. If you’re a first-timer, you’ll probably be better off renting your skis and a helmet at the resort rather than making the investment on your own, but below are a few of the must-brings when it comes to a ski holiday.

Ski Jacket

While not everyone is able (or needs to) invest in their own set of skis, having a warm, waterproof ski jacket is a must if you want to make your life as pleasant as it can be out on the slopes. Just get the best you can afford – it doesn’t have to be fancy. If your budget stretches you should also buy a pair of waterproof snow pants too. (Particularly as a beginner when you’re going to be spending a lot of time falling over!) Remember, your ski jacket will also be perfect for evenings out as well so there’s no need to pack another.

Socks

The need for warm socks cannot be overstated and you should pack several pairs to allow for washing/drying time. Again, get the best you can afford, but preferably thermal ones. There’s a bamboozling range from which to choose and the top of the range can be pretty expensive, so weigh up your options.

Goggles

Goggles are another vital piece of equipment and one you’ll get at a much better price if you purchase at home and not wait until you’re in resort before deciding you need them. A decent pair of goggles makes all the difference to visibility and sun protection and, again, they range from basic to super high-tech – just don’t get swayed by fashion over functionality.

Gloves

A good pair of thermal, waterproof gloves will be your best friends when you venture outside your catered ski chalets. La Plagne has a good range of shops where you can purchase all manner of gear, but you’ll definitely be better off purchasing them to bring with you in terms of cost.

Backpack

Don’t forget to bring a small, lightweight backpack to take out on the slopes with you to carry snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, your phone and any other small items. It’s not an absolute requirement, but it’s far better than filling your pockets with things and, as long as you don’t overload yourself, you’ll hardly feel it on your back.

Off the Slopes

In terms of what to bring for the times you’re off the slopes, along with your casual clothes and something smart for a restaurant visit, don’t forget:

- Some comfortable walking shoes

- A hat, scarf and woollen gloves

- Swimwear to wear in the hot tub and sauna

- Sunscreen

- First aid kit

Of course there are so many other things you might want to bring with you, but our list covers the basics: the things you really can’t do without. If you’ve booked one of the fantastic catered ski chalets La Plagne has to offer, you’re in for a truly wonderful holiday and if it’s the first time you’ve skied, get ready to create a brand new obsession!
