The Cinque Terre, in Italy, could be one of the most romantic places in the world; the coastal trail that links the five villages that cling to the side of the cliffs is even called the Via dell’Amore – the Way of Love. If you’re feeling the need for a little romance in your life, a visit to this magical region is something that will remain in your heart and mind forever. Here’s how to maximise the romance… Check the Weather There’s really no wrong time to take a romantic holiday, is there? But, having said that, when you’re looking at the best time to visit Cinque Terre there are a few things you need to consider. If you want to maximise your tan and work up a sweat then you can’t beat summer, of course, but it’s important to know that if you’re after some quiet couples’ time, it might actually not be the best time to visit. Cinque Terre is extremely popular in the summer months and the crowds can get a little hectic at times – on the trail and also in the villages. So if you don’t mind the weather a little cooler (and in fact it’s very pleasant) and your priority is fewer people, autumn might be the best time to visit Cinque Terre for that romantic getaway. Walk Along the Via dell’Amore The 1.5km Via dell’Amore, the part of the trail between the villages of Riomaggiore and Manarola, was created through sheer rock during the construction of the train line in the 1920s. Before this there had been virtually no access between the villages, but the trail quickly became a secret meeting place for the young men and women of the two towns – giving rise to many a tryst. Today the trail is filled with declarations of love scratched into every surface, so it’s the perfect place to add your own names to record your relationship for posterity! Visit (or stay in) Vernazza We’d never play favourites and each of the five villages has its own charm – but it has been said that, for romance, Vernazza has the edge. The village itself has a very traditional feel, surrounded by steep terraces of olive groves and pastel-coloured houses spreading up the cliffs from the tiny port; if you arrive by boat it’s one of the most magnificent sights you’ll ever see. There are some lovely guesthouses and plenty of intimate restaurants and bars to dine, but, then again, sitting on the rocks down by the port at sunset with a takeaway pizza and some wine is every bit as romantic. Indulge in the Food and Wine One of the joys of a couples’ break is the opportunity to eat and drink to your hearts’ content and throw the diet out the window! You’ll be able to indulge in fabulous local food at a host of the restaurants and cafes in the five villages, with local specialities being olives, sardines, pesto and all manner of other seafood caught in the surrounding waters. Picture this: a fresh seafood feast accompanied by some local wine (made from grapes grown on the hillsides), enjoyed in a restaurant perched on the edge of the cliff overlooking the ocean… enough said? Soak up the Sunsets While the majority of people visit on a day trip from Florence, if you’re planning on staying overnight (or two, or three) you’ll have the pleasure of experiencing what many people claim are the most beautiful sunsets on the planet. Manarola is arguably the best place of all, with plenty of easy-to-get-to spots to enjoy them – one of the most iconic of these is Nessun Dorma bar, when sunset is definitely the best time to visit. Cinque Terre also has countless other places you can simply sit on a rock, a beach, or even in an olive grove and watch the evening show – and if that doesn’t top the romance stakes, what does?
