Helpful Tips On Making A Poppy Wreath

Art and Culture,Crafts,Hobbies
Poppy wreaths are very popular and can be created for all sorts of holidays or special occasions.

Discover many helpful crafting tips and ideas on making a dried poppies wreath with poppy pods.

Creating a beautiful poppy wreath is a crafting skill, similar to those required for cooking or painting, which is best attempted when following the correct instructions. A poppies wreath requires a firm base which basically functions as the framework for all the decorative material, such as dried poppy pods, which you will add on afterward. You then follow this up by matching the delicacy of the floral materials to the proper base. Even though there are numerous materials you can utilize for a poppy wreath base, there are 3 particular ones that are considered to be the most popular.

Wire Base Poppy Wreath

A wire base poppy wreath is created by firstly bending a regular coat hanger into a circle. This is a great benefit since the coat hanger has a natural hook at the top which can be used to hang the wreath after it is completed. Differing strengths of wire can easily be purchased at your local hardware retailer. When you have 2 complete circles of wire joined together it can provide a surprisingly durable framework for heavier floral wreath materials such as pine cones, dried apples, or even evergreens. Thinner professional florist wiring should be used for a more delicate poppy wreaths, for example, for making a crown of cherry blossoms or red peonies. If you want to camouflage the wire wreath base, you may want to try wrapping the wire with decorative ribbon or tape from a florist.

Creating a poppy wreath with a wire base will allow you to add floral materials in clumps or small bundles. You do this by gathering a bunch of flowers, and/or bits of greenery, and placing them onto the wire frame. You quickly follow that by using a thin, bendable florist's wire to secure them in place. Please note that you shouldn't attempt to cut the wire at this point, but rather overlap the joining part with separate cluster of flowers and/or greens and continue to wrap your way, in a circular motion, around the entire frame.

There are some who prefer their poppy wreaths, whose materials are organized in a continuous circle, with all the clusters facing towards the same direction. In order to complete this type of poppy wreath requires you to tuck the joining part of the end cluster under the 1st cluster. Furthermore, in other types of poppies wreaths, you may choose to work down both sides to have the bundles meet at the bottom. With this particular arrangement, it will cause a bare spot to appear which can easily be covered up placing a ribbon or a braid/bow of your existing floral materials.

Wire poppy wreaths are typically quite delicate and are often used for much lighter materials such as bird feathers or ivy leaves. One way around this is to use a firm piece of wire and thread it directly through larger materials such as red chillis or even apples, in a lengthwise position, to produce attractive and intriguing poppy wreaths.

Vine Base Poppy Wreath

Vine based poppy wreaths create a much more natural look since you are using living organic materials as opposed to metal. Some of the most favoured vines used for poppy wreaths are Grapevine, Wisteria and Honeysuckle. If you have are able to obtain these materials brand new and fresh they can be coiled together into a circle and then left to dry in order to prepare them for completing a wreath. If you are not able to find any fresh vines that is okay to because you can simply immerse the ones that you do have in water until they are flexible enough to be shaped.

With a vine base poppy wreath you quite often can insert your flowers and green leaves into the numerous small cavities within the wreath itself which saves you the trouble of having to use sticky tape or metal wiring. If you need to use some sort a securing device, and still want to maintain the organic wreath look, you can try using regular string. For those that are much pickier about this matter you can use a flower called morning glory to secure your floral materials. The best outcomes is still best realized by using fresh picked vines as they retain that malleable benefit which makes it much easier to work with.

Straw Base Poppy Wreath

Straw material actually creates a much stronger base but the trade-off is that it is much heavier as well. You can acquire straw wreaths at most craft retail stores or even make one yourself by wrapping straw in a ring-shaped form and then bind it with some string or with the same straw to create a more natural appearance. One good advantage from using a straw base is that it allows you to stick decorative materials directly into the straw itself by employing florist's picks or the long thin stems from some of your existing floral materials. Another option is to use a glue gun to attach various items but be aware that if you choose to do this your wreath will become permanent as opposed to using the previously mentioned method where the added items can still be removed should you decide to alter your poppy wreath.

The straw material serves as a convenient and befitting backdrop for brightly coloured additions and the overall appearance of the wreath itself. A much more breathtaking and effective wreath can be created by gathering a few strands of straw into 3 thick strands and weaving these into 1 thick braided wreath.

The multitude of various creative arrangements that can be made with a poppy wreath makes it a versatile craft project that is able to meet the needs of almost every type of occasion. Poppy wreaths are well received in all holidays and seasons. There are many tips and techniques to creating your very own unique poppies wreath. For example, in an herb wreath, the neutral colour of a dried poppy pod aids in bringing out the stronger colors of the Marjoram, Pink Pepper Berries, and Marigold. The unique shape of a dried poppy flower enhances the design of any poppy wreath. For smaller poppy wreaths, that may include the neutral color of miniature poppy pods to compliment such floral materials as the purple shade and pale colour of lavender, can create enchanting ambience in any room of your home. The neutral shade of a medium ovoid dried poppy pod can also be a great compliment to a Christmas poppy wreath by accentuating the bolder colours of the greenish herbs and red winter.
