The Cinque Terre Weather: Season by Season

Art and Culture,Travel & Tourism
One of the most stunning places in Italy, the Cinque Terre, with its rugged coastline and dramatic cliffs, is home to five of the most gorgeous villages you’ll ever see. Perched somewhat precariously, the tiny hamlets have been here for centuries and every year people flock to experience all this lovely area has to offer. Providing the discerning visitor with everything from boating, hiking and dining, to exploring, sunbathing and swimming, the region makes for a wonderful day trip, especially if you're staying in Florence.

But, when planning your visit you may want to know exactly what the Cinque Terre weather is like. Being in Italy, there is plenty of sunshine, but if you are planning the 14km hike, for example, making your trip in the height of summer may not be the most pleasant. You are really going to need the lowdown on the Cinque Terre weather depending on your plans. Let us break it down into seasons...

Spring

Everything in the villages wakes up in spring and local things like the ferries begin to function again. The weather is very pleasant and not too hot, so for the budding hikers this may be the time to don the walking boots. If you choose a day in later spring, you will still need lots of sunscreen and water, as temperatures rise quickly as the season goes on.

Some say spring is too cold to swim, but with a wetsuit anything is possible. Lots of locals hit the water at this time of year when the beaches are quieter.

The average temperature is between 12 and 18 degrees centigrade.

Summer

Obviously the hottest time (and the busiest too), summer boasts a great atmosphere here, with lots of opportunities to swim. August is by far the hottest month, and this is when the locals tend to switch off and take their own summer holidays - this month can be hit and miss with things being open, so bear this in mind when booking.

The key for visiting in summer is suncream and hydration. The breeze on the coast can make it feel cooler, which is refreshing but doesn’t stop you getting sunburn if you are not prepared.

Temperatures rise to 28-32 degrees centigrade and can be higher.

Autumn

A gorgeous time of the year, autumn attracts lots of couples, especially those who can travel outside of school holidays. It can still be hot in September but October is much fresher. As the sea retains its warmth from the summer, this can be a good time to enjoy some bathing too. Ferries run until the end of October but, if you leave your visit until then, you may experience some changeable Cinque Terre weather. The occasional strom or rainy day means that it is wise to bring a waterproof jacket.

Temperatures range between a pleasant 20-26 degrees centigrade on average.

Winter

Winter is a delight here, if you don’t mind the rain and the much cooler temperatures. Crowds are non-existent, which can be appealing, but if you do decide to come at this time of year, you need to be more self-sufficient as public transport is minimal and the hiking trails may be closed. For those who do make it though, it is worth it just to see the beautiful Christmas garlands and decorated villages.

Temperatures fall to 10-14 degrees centigrade.

Despite the Cinque Terre weather varying throughout the year, each season brings its pros and cons when you're considering a visit. We suggest booking with a reputable tour operator who will be able to advise on the best time to visit, depending on what your plans are. Whenever you visit, however, you are guaranteed a great time!
