There are currently five hatchback cars that continue to sell and perform well in Australia. These models offered by Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Chery, Hyundai and Suzuki all offer something unique, such as affordability, excellent fuel economy or a stylish design. Mitsubishi Colt Mitsubishi has introduced another smaller car to its line-up with the Colt, an attractive hatchback that seats 5. The Colt features an interesting design with a high body to add an appearance of size and wheels that have been pushed out to the corners of the vehicle. The interior of the Colt is well designed and spacious, especially for the front seat passenger. This fuel efficient small car is ideal for city driving with its easy drive and excellent visibility. Volkswagen Golf Volkswagen has produced some of the most well-known small cars in the world, including the Beetle and the Golf. The Golf, around since 1974, seats 5 and sells for about $25,950 to start. The design has been updated dramatically over the years and it now sports a sleek exterior along with a quiet ride and a fuel economy to rival many hybrids currently on the market. Perhaps the biggest selling point of the Golf over other small cars is its automatic parking assistant, as well as a range of other high-end features available. Hyundai i30 Australia's Best Cars voted the Hyundai i30 the best mid-size car three years in a row. This vehicle remains one of Australia's best hatchback cars with its multitude of safety features, as well as its 5-star ANCAP rating. Starting at $26,490, the i30 combines a stylish exterior with an efficient and powerful engine. This vehicle is doing a great deal to change Hyundai's long-standing reputation and proves that the car maker can produce a reliable, comfortable car. Chery J1 The Chery J1 is the cheapest of the small cars offered in Australia and represents China's first venture into the passenger car market in the country. The Chery J1 is available for just under $12,000, and this is certainly an excellent value for anyone in the market for a cheap vehicle. The maker also includes a 100,000 kilometres, 3-year warranty with every new Chery J1. Unfortunately, the low price point does come with disadvantages. This hatchback does not have ESP stability control, meaning it will not be sold in Victoria. It may be banned elsewhere in the country if this necessary safety feature isn't added in the near future. The Chery offers a basic car with standard features for the price but doesn't stand up very well against its closest competitor, the Suzuki Alto. Suzuki Alto GL The Suzuki Alto is the best competitor to the Chery J1 as far as cost and affordability. This hatchback also comes with better features and a sleeker design. The GL model of the car excludes the important safety feature of electronic stability control, although it is standard on the slightly more expensive GLX model. Overall, the Alto sports a good fuel economy and roomy interior, although the low price point means it doesn't have all the features and power of the Volkswagen Golf, for example.
