Toyota keeps on rolling with new models from its Corolla line. In May 2012, the company launched the redesigned Toyota Corolla Axio sedan and its station wagon counterpart for the Japanese domestic market. Both the Axio and the Corolla Fielder wagon were given a facelift that lessened body size but retained Toyota’s signature safety and comfort. The new body size is 50mm less than the previous model, making the car more compact. Inside, the knee space for the rear seats is expanded, adding 40mm to make for a more roomy and comfortable ride for passengers. For effortless driving in tight spots, Toyota reduced the minimum turning radius of the Axio to 4.9 m, allowing it to be easily maneuvered into small garages and narrow parking spaces. Buyers of the new Axio have a choice among seven body colors, among which is the elegant Mellow Silver Metallic. The compact body and classy look make the Toyota Corolla Axio a popular sedan among Japanese car buyers. A new Axio deserves a new engine, and the 1.3-liter 1NR-FE engine is exactly that. It has high fuel efficiency of 20.6 km/L for city cruising, and because of its Dual VVT-i technology, both intake and exhaust are optimized, allowing high torque even at low and mid-range speeds. To further improve fuel efficiency, Toyota equipped the Axio with a Stop & Start System that shuts the engine off automatically when not in use, such as while waiting out a red light and other short stops. The Axio meets the 2015 fuel efficiency standards, making it a very environment-friendly car. The Toyota Corolla Axio performs very well in safety tests due to its numerous safety features. Seats are designed to prevent lessen injury due to whiplash; seatbelts have pre-tensioners and force limiters; and there are six airbags, including side and curtain shield airbags. The car also has Vehicle Stability Control which manages engine output and the brakes. In the event of skidding—on a muddy road, for example—the stability of the car is maintained; at the same time, Traction Control makes sure that the accelerator is easily controlled to prevent wheel-spin. Nighttime visibility is greatly improved with the Axio’s High Intensity Discharge lamp, which has beams and a camera sensor that automatically adjusts headlight beams based on the amount of surrounding light. This is most helpful during night driving when front visibility is much needed. The rearview mirror has automatic anti-glare features—when the embedded sensor detects light from behind, it adjusts the mirror’s reflexivity and improves visibility. For the benefit of differently-abled persons and the elderly, the Axio may be installed with Welcab Rotating and Sliding Passenger seats. The seats allow for easier seating and disembarking Though originally released for the Japanese domestic market, Toyota Corolla Axios may now be owned by purchasing used cars from used-car sellers and dealers. The quality and comfort are the same but the used cars are definitely cheaper—a wise choice for those in the market for a functional yet stylish car.
