Are you interested in importing cars from Japan to South Africa? Here are some Frequently Asked Questions with corresponding answers to help guide you in the importation process. Who can import motor vehicles? South African nationals holding permanent residency status may import motor vehicles. Returning South African residents and nationals may also import, provided that full duties and taxes are applicable unless the importers can convince South African Customs that they had no intention of returning when they originally left. Immigrants may also import, provided that have been granted permanent residency status by the Department of Home Affairs. Persons with special needs, or those who are physically disabled, may import specially-designed vehicles if the request is supported by a certificate issued by a medical doctor. Temporary residents may import vehicles but they would have to pay a provisional payment to cover full taxes and duties. Every six months thereafter, an extension must be requested. The provisional payment will be refunded after the vehicle leaves the country or when the buyer obtains permanent residency status. What vehicles may be imported? Vehicles that have been inherited (for example, from a deceased relative) may be imported into South Africa as long as the identified official heir submits a copy of the deceased’s will and a copy of the vehicle’s original registration certificate showing that the car is registered to the deceased. The heir-importer should also submit a copy of the death certificate, his or her South African passport or any valid ID, and also a copy of the deceased’s passport or ID. Import cars from Japan to South Africa may be allowed if these have been classified as “vintage,” meaning these are 40 years old and older. Another classification is so-called “collector’s car”—vehicles that fall in this category should be recognized as such, whether by international organizations (take the case of high-performance cars, for example) or other automotive experts. Racing cars may be imported provided the importer is actually a professional racecar driver—this, of course, should be supported by the submission of a copy of his/her competition racing car driver’s license (national, regional, or international competition). The cars that may be allowed are only those that will be used for circuit or track racing events. Vehicles that have been specially-designed that are not available in South Africa may be imported. The importation of vehicle types and models that are available locally from South African manufacturers are restricted. What are the required documents for importation? The following are the essential documents that must be accomplished before the shipping of import cars from Japan to South Africa: - Import Permit from the International Trade Administration Commission. For this, you must have a status of permanent residence, supported with a proof of residence. - Letter of Authority from the South African Bureau of Standards in Pretoria. This is required whether you are shipping a new car or an old one. These documents are important for you to be able to ship your vehicle into the country legally. The other documentation you need to produce are for validation purposes. These are: - purchase documentation (invoices) - insurance certification It may be a meticulous process getting secondhand vehicles into the country, but if you do your homework and choose the right vehicle model well, it would be very worth it to import cars from Japan to South Africa.
