MasterCard International has announced it has become the naming rights sponsor of the Australian Masters, renaming the tournament the MasterCard Masters. Over the course of the four-year official sponsorship, MasterCard will also be an associate sponsor of the Holden Australian Open, Johnnie Walker Classic and AAMI fer callaway diablo edge Women’s Australian Open this coming season. Commenting on the value of the new sponsorship deal Leigh Clapham, Senior Vice President and General Manager for Australasia, MasterCard International said, “Golf is an integral part of MasterCard’s integrated global marketing strategy building brand awareness, increasing card usage and providing extended value to MasterCard cardholders.” “MasterCard is delighted to be the official sponsor of the Australian Masters and related events strengthening our position as a global marketing leader reaching an estimated 1.32 million adult Australian golfers and the purchasing power they represent.” The MasterCard Masters sponsorship is an extension of MasterCard’s long-term global support of golf furthering the Company’s commitment to sport, as seen with the recent success of the bois 3 callaway 2002 FIFA World Cup sponsorship. “This is a great opportunity to be involved in a highly respected Australian tournament and we are pleased to be working with such a professional and significantly experienced organisation as IMG,” said Mr Clapham. In addition to MasterCard sponsorship of the MasterCard Masters, the Company has extended its golf investment with the sponsorship of Adam Scott as a MasterCard Ambassador. Scott, 22, presently ranked the No. 5 Australian golfer in the world, is considered to represent the professionalism, competitiveness, resourcefulness, leadership and success aligned with the MasterCard brand. “I am thrilled to be entering into a relationship R11 Fers with MasterCard International and to be associated with a brand supporting golf globally,” said Scott. The 2002 MasterCard Masters will be played at Huntingdale Golf Club in Melbourne from December 5 – 8 and will profile some of the sport’s leading players. The Masters is one of the highlights of the Australasian Tour since it began in 1979.
