Vinyl has for far too long had far too poor a reputation when it comes to matters of esthetics. Though it should be obvious, it is often necessary to explain to people that not all vinyl is the variety that looks terribly cheap and terribly reminiscent of the 1970s. The word “vinyl” is used to describe a material that comes in a variety of textures, hardnesses, colors, and has multiple uses. Vinyl records are something made of the material that is very well known, but have you ever seen a sofa upholstered in vinyl that looks and feels like a record? Of course not. Perhaps, then, it isn’t much of a stretch to say that not all vinyl is created equal and many varieties not only look perfectly acceptable, but look quite fetching in the modern home. When you think of vinyl and the first thing you think is a gaudy living room from decades past, it is because you are only calling to mind the cheapest, most horrific variety of the material. Due to advancement in good taste in furniture as well as advancement in chemistry and other sciences, there are now specialty vinyl fabrics available to upholster the furniture in your home. Most people don’t realize that faux leather is a type of vinyl and many people have faux leather couches, either for ethical reasons or because true leather is much more pricey. As such, many vinyl-haters are already proprietors. Upholstery vinyl is some of the most versatile of all vinyl – you probably own something in upholstery vinyl without even knowing it. It ranges from that clear vinyl fabric that your grandma drapes over her furniture to make sure nothing damages it or spills on it, to specialty vinyl fabrics that are hardly distinguishable from its counterparts. It varies between faux leather on sofas to marine vinyl flooring that is found on boats. In short, it is simply due to ignorance that people condemn all varieties of vinyl as being ugly, tacky, or out of date. Vinyl is available in many varieties and is used for many purposes. Don’t think that it is only for living rooms out of the ‘70s, or records out of the ‘70s, for that matter. It is time for people to drop the attitude when it comes to vinyl and gather a little knowledge about it. They would be surprised how much they already have in their houses.
