Dark Matter by Michelle Paver For something spooky read Dark Matter, a chilling ghost story set in 1930s Britain. While war is brewing overseas Jack, an unremarkable twenty-eight year old, is offered the chance to go on an artic expedition to Gruhuken, Norway, an uninhabited part of the country. One by one, Jack’s expedition colleagues leave for home with various excuses and Jack must decide whether to stay or go as the Arctic summer is quickly drawing to a close, leaving Norway in total darkness and Jack with the sense that he isn’t all alone after all. This eerie tale offers up hints of terror, leaving you with a spine tingling shiver following every word. Freedom by Jonathan Franzen Take a look into the contemporary American marriage with Freedom, a bestselling book detailing the lives of the Berglunds. Walter and Patty Berglund live in St. Paul, Minnesota, and lead a happy life complete with envious neighbours. Their lives begin to crumble though when their son Joey begins sleeping with the girl next door, who is decidedly older. Following this revelation, the plot is twisted and tangled in a million different ways that will keep you constantly looking around corners, desperate to know more about the family. Each character packs a punch and has their own story to tell, making it incredibly difficult to put this book down!
