The ability to overcome adversity is an essential ingredient of anyone’s success and it’s what has kept Golden State Fence on top despite the rough patch that was encountered in recent years. Mel Kay started Golden State Fence in 1962 and has built it up to what it is today, the leader in commercial and residential fence building in Southern California. The first bump in the road for Melvin occurred during a stint as a sawmill owner in Idaho during the late 1970’s. Prior to the business folding, he lost a portion of his right hand and a finger in an equipment accident. Shortly thereafter, he returned to California to focus on the fencing company. The real estate boom of the 1990’s created an explosion of business and profit for Golden State Fence. Topping out at $150 million in annual sales, Mel Kay was employing up to 750 employees. This flow of business continued into the late 2000’s when Melvin’s world was rocked by the real estate crash. Melvin has worked hard to rebuild after losing a portion of his workforce following the economic downturn. But it wasn’t just his fire for overcoming the diversity. It was his loyalty to his company and employees. Melvin is known to be a gregarious leader, as well as a humble, fair, generous, personable man. This attribute has been an important factor in creating the solid company he operates today and has definitely proven an integral portion of his material success. Mel Kay continues to have governmental contracts awarded to his company, and they serve as his bread and butter to bridge the gap in the shortfalls of the current market. But he isn’t the top fencing agent in his region just for that. Homebuilders and private homeowners enjoy great flexibility and selection in Golden State Fence. Melvin has successfully diversified his offerings to not just fencing, but also electronic gates, security enclosures and pet kennels. Today, Melvin is still going strong. However, the economic slump has shrunk his workforce to around 450. But Mel Kay is still at it. At nearly 70 years of age, he is still the face of the most successful fence company in his region and will likely remain that way for years to come.
