The general transportation of goods, raw materials or merchandise by an aircraft is known as Airfreight cargo. It is also known as air cargo commonly. Airfreight cargo has been used since the year 1911. But then conventional aircraft were used for the transportation of cargo. As time passed, the airplane makers also started designing and manufacturing planes that were to be used specially for the transportation of goods and consignments as the market demand for such planes rose. Today the viable options in terms of aircraft for cargo transport are countless. There are many aircraft available today which serve the sole purpose of Airfreight cargo. These huge aircraft make use of technologically advanced lifts to load and unload containers and their functioning is highly similar to that of the container ships that travel across the world’s oceans. There are many electric rollers used by airline companies that enable a fast and damage free shift of the cargo containers into the cargo holds of the airplanes that are known to have capacities exceeding several tons of weight. There are even rollers that have a carrying capacity that exceeds a hundred pounds. Also, today nearly all of the nations in the world own or make use such planes and use them for the speedy transport of goods and supplies. Many of them even manufacture their own planes to for this purpose. Everything can be transported as Airfreight cargo today. From letters and small packages to automobiles & heavy construction equipment to animals & luggage, etc. the list is unlimited. Airfreight cargo today can be broadly classified into two main categories. Small sized cargo that is transported on passenger planes and large cargo that is transported aboard dedicated cargo jets. The basic pricing policy followed universally today is pretty simple. Greater the weight of the cargo, higher will be the charges. In some cases the fragility of the goods is also considered as these goods need careful handling to protect them from damage. If calculated, the total weight of cargo transported annually by mode of Airfreight cargo around the world will exceed hundreds of thousands of metric tons.
