So, a pure gold tattoo is the latest body adornment for the fashionably rich! If you missed this week’s media obsession with the story, a company in Dubai is now offering 24-carat tattoos ranging in price from $50 to $5,500 (US). It got a few of us at The Perth Mint talking about the bizarre uses of gold we’d heard about. Like the pure gold iPod, or the even flashier gold iPad with 53 diamonds on the Apple logo! Apparently, upmarket car-maker Porsche offers a pair of gold and platinum sunglasses with 24-carat gold mirrored lenses. If that’s not glitzy enough, how about the tiny scale model of a Bugatti Veyron made from gold and platinum encrusted with diamonds? It’s said it will set you back more than the actual supercar! For anyone with a real taste for gold, there’s Goldschläger, the schnapps liqueur from Europe that’s bottled with floating flakes of gold. Or how about a Golden Opulence Sundae at New York’s Serendipity 3 restaurant? It's served with sprinkles of 23-carat gold leaf! But, we asked ourselves, what is the weirdest use of all? Maybe it’s still Hong Kong’s famed solid gold toilet (or was the threat to melt it down once the price of gold topped US$1,000 ever carried out?). Whatever, it all goes to prove the never-ending allure of gold and the prestige we associate with the shiny yellow metal. Whether it’s in the form of bullion bars and coins, exotic tattoos or a seemingly endless choice of wacky items in between, there’s no end of choice. As promised, here are our sales and mintage figures for previous years’ bullion coins. The figures have taken some time to re-evaluate because not only have we audited the Australian Lunar gold and silver bullion series, but we’ve also gone through sales and mintages for the Australian Kangaroo, Australian Kookaburra and Australian Koala bullion coins. In some cases, the historical data goes back to 1987. For those with particular interest in Lunar Series 1, I re-confirm that we did not strike these coins after the program was closed off. We never have and we never will. On that I am categorical. The Perth Mint, home of Australian precious metals since 1899, produces gold and silver coins and Gold bullion to suit all types of investment, and is a highly-regarded Australian institution.
