Paper shredders are divided into six levels of security, determined by how they shred the paper fed into them. Not all shredders are qualified to handle every sensitive document for the fact that such crucial company or personal property has to be shredded thoroughly to the point that it is impossible to piece the file together. For example, top-level shredders are employed by government agencies to destroy top secret files, mainly those on the level of national security. Level one: A normal document can be shredded at level one, which is also known as general document destruction. Most homes and some businesses employ level one shredding, probably for the sake of recycling paper or freeing some space. When the paper is fed into a level one certified paper shredder, it will create paper strips measuring about 10.5 to nearly 12 mm, or 3/8 to half inch. At this width, you can still piece back the shredded paper. Level two: Level two shredding includes files containing personal information and other sensitive data in a company. Paper shredders certified as level-two shredders can produce paper strips measuring about 3.9 to nearly 6 mm, or 1/8 to a quarter inch. From level two onwards, the shredding process can also produce cross-cut shreds measuring 7.2 to 10.5 mm in width by 40 to 80 mm in length. Chances of piecing back a file shredded at level two are reduced. Levels three and four: As the level of security rises for paper shredding Los Angeles companies do, the width of the strips grows smaller. At level three shredding, strip cuts measure exactly 1.9 mm, or 1/16 of an inch. Cross-cut strips, on the other hand, are no wider than 6 mm, or a quarter of an inch. At level four and beyond, strip cuts are no longer done for increased security, only cross-cut strips no wider than 2 mm are done by level four shredders. Levels five and six: Government agencies are required to shred classified documents at levels five to six shredding. At the level five shredding Los Angeles firms do, cross-cut strips are only 0.78 mm wide and 11 mm long to the point that you can turn it into confetti. Level six is the maximum level of shredding security possible, producing cross-cut strips measuring 1 mm wide and 5 mm long. For companies, level four may be the peak level of security for paper shredding Los Angeles offers. It may be enough to destroy the file for good. Security levels exist to preserve security and ensure the safety of the parties involved in the creation of the file.
