Don’ts - Over promise
There is nothing more annoying than expecting a product at your doorstep on a Sunday morning and getting it actually delivered on a Monday night. Don’t promise customers terms of time, service and quality that cannot be adhered to. You need to be absolutely sure about the efficiency of your backend supply chain and support team to deliver in the promised time and with the stated quality. Your commitments are going to build your customers’ expectations, so always under promise and over deliver. - Clicks
Every single click added in the cart to checkout process of your ecommerce website adds to an increase in the dropout ratio on the shopping site. Amazon spent millions on building the single click checkout and patenting the process. Your store should be as close as possible to this. Don’t make the user click even for one extra time during checkout unless it is absolutely essential. Your customer is looking at paying you on the website – make it as simple and as fast as possible for him. - Images
What looks good- Sells good ! No matter how good the design of your ecommerce website templates is - blurred, pixel disturbed, images can play a party spoiler. Your customers are going to judge the genuineness of the entire ecommerce business based on how well you present the products or service you offer. Don’t settle for mediocre images. Image design is as important as your logo design. Buy images if needed or hire a professional photographer to do it for you. Investing in having the images processed from a good graphic designer is another option if you already have images of fair quality. The look of the entire site is going to depend on the images – so again : Don’t settle for mediocre images. - Security
The technology on which your ecommerce platform is built is going to play a crucial role in making your customers feel at ease while ordering on your website. A single slack in security can cause your customers to drop out for a lifetime. Never compromise on the security of your customers data. If using an open source platform, make sure your scripts are updated. Work with reliable and reputed payment gateways. Don’t compromise on the security of your store and your customers will keep coming back to give you the worth of your investments on securing your website. - Innovation
If you think you have the right formula and the perfect shopping website running online, do a simple exercise or running a survey with your existing or prospective customers and you will have a list of enhancements needed within 3 days – both in terms of web design as well as the software features. Once you have your shopping website up and running, don’t stop innovating, keep thinking of new ways of improving the entire shopping experience for your users, new ways of providing better service and support. With cutting edge competition, this is the biggest thing that is going to keep giving your customers a reason to choose you over the competition.
