Faridabad, the city located next to the posh south Delhi district and a part of the National Capital Region of Delhi, is often termed as a grossly undervalued as compared to its strategic location and despite its being an old industrial township, with history of settlement dating back by centuries. Why has it remained such an undervalued city despite being inhabited on both sides of the thriving Mathura Road, with many industrial and residential spaces around? It is a fact that this city has not figured prominently in the development plans of the region for long. Interestingly, even the development of Gurgaon region has skipped Faridabad. Due to proximity to airport, development of Gurgaon has been suited for MNCs and IT majors and this has rapidly changed the landscape and fortunes of this city. But, Faridabad had been left largely untouched with the development of neighbouring district. Some parts of Faridabad has been home to the resettlers from Pakistan who came here after partition. It has also been home to various industries, especially the engineering industries, which have led to this city being home to the workers and labourers alongside the industrialists and agriculturalists. This mixed population profile has been in strike contrast to the development of Gurgaon which has not had any such history and where the development has been only been a recent phenomenon leading to it being home to an altogether different profile of population. The way the cities have been developed in the past and the kind of population profiles that have it their resident hubs, has also contributed to the rather ignorance of Faridabad in the development equations. Things seem to be finally changing as there is a renewed focus on developing realty in this region and help it utilise its true potential. With the development of hotels, malls and multiplexes, hospitals, schools, business parks, commercial markets, residential spaces and transportation links such as the Metro Rail, there has been a trend towards developing urban amenities. Further, the development effort has also been extended to the Greater Faridabad region where cluster housing region is being developed in order to meet the demand of affordable housing of the people. A number of builders are coming up with their residential, commercial projects and other real-estate projects, promising a modern lifestyle to people, in this region. This is further expected to increase the value of the realty market in Faridabad, though some skeptics might also argue that the development of Greater Faridabad might again lead to ignorance of Faridabad, just like it happened in case of Gurgaon. However, many others dispel this skepticism by arguing that since there is no geographic or distance barrier, the development of both the old and the new Faridabad would be synchronous.
