The difference is forced induction of intercooledair–turbocharging. The 2012 Kia Sportage SX is atop-of-the-line trim level that fills in all the option boxes andcombines them with the same four-cylinder engine I"ve ravedabout in the Optima SX and Hyundai Sonata. The naturally-aspiratedTheta engine in the other Sportage models produces aclass-competitive 176-horsepower and 168 lb/ft of torque. The2.0-litre turbocharged and direct-injected unit used in the SXbumps both numbers rather significantly.
It also ensures thetorque peaks at only 1800-rpm and remains at that level until 3,000– right where we spend the vast majority of our driving life. So you get tremendous power for acceleration whether from a stoplight or when climbing hills. In passing situation it minimizes theamount of time in the passing lane. It also changes the verypersonality of the car — having so much readily-availablepower available at the mere touch of your toe makes for a veryrelaxed driving manner.
You know you can go when necessary. But the really slick part of this particular combination is thatyou don"t sacrifice fuel efficiency unless you chose to doso. Maintain normal driving practices and the turbo is not put touse. You have a very high tech and efficient engine that recordssome pretty impressive numbers.
This is one of the rare vehicleswhere I came anywhere near the Transport Canada fuel economyratings. On a 150-km highway run I averaged 7.9 while in citydriving the indicators number was only slightly above 11.0. The engineers have done a masterful job of eliminating turbo lag,that spec of time between when you ask for more power and when theengine delivers. Turbochargers are powered by exhaust gasses and insome applications it takes a moment or two for the spinning turboto force more air into the intake stream.
Not here. Kia has positioned the SX atop the Sportage line. In addition tothe turbo engine you also get visual reminders this is a specialSportage: a honeycomb grill, unique 18-inch alloy wheels, a pair ofbig chromed exhaust outlets and a T-GDi badge (Turbocharged,Gasoline, Direct-injection). Inside you will step over chromedscuff plates in the door sill to be welcomes by a unique instrumentpanel and leather seats with contrasting stitching.
The SX also boasts some pretty unique features for this class: acooled glove box, heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seatsand a fixed glass roof over the rear seat to compliment the powersunroof over front occupants. Speaking of the rear seat there isplenty of headroom back there despite that see-through roof. Other standard equipment included: dual zone climate control, powerwindows, lock and heated mirrors; remote keyless entry, push buttonstart, dual-zone climate control, upgraded audio system, wirelessconnectivity, tilt and telescopic steering column, backup camera,cargo cover and net and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror withHomelink. While the Sportage is labelled and competes in the compact segmentthere is very little compact inside.
With both rows of seats inplace there is 740 litres of cargo space. Fold the second seat andthat jumps to 1,547 litres – serious space. Making it evenmore useful is the layout – the big rear hatch reveals analmost-square opening, allowing you to carry truly bulky loads. The SX comes with Kia"s Dynamax all-wheel-drive system whichsends 100 per cent of the power to the front wheels under mostconditions for maximum fuel economy and directional stability.Under acceleration, when weight is transferred off the frontwheels, the system sends some power to the rear. In slipperysituations power is transferred instantly and automatically asrequired, up to 50 per cent of it to the rear.
If conditions getreally ugly you can press a small button and lock the distributionat 50/50 up to about 40 km/h at which point it returns decisions tothe onboard computer and its network of sensors. The system alsoincorporates downhill brake assist, hill start assist and tractioncontrol. The Sportage SX displays decent road manners with a pleasant ridedespite the low-profile tires. The suspension absorbs majorimperfections with ease but the short-sidewalls tend to pass alongreally sharp surface changes.
On the other hand, the low-profiletires allow steering inputs to be passed along to the treads withminimal delay or interference. The Sportage is a good-looking vehicle, a stand-out in this class.But both of my gripes lie with the styling. I know really coolpeople, especially vehicle designers, like to dress in black. Butthe desire to pass that taste along to the interior of a vehiclecan result in pretty dull surroundings.
The test vehicle with adark charcoal exterior had a coal black interior with nary a letupin sight. It is not so much the style as the lack of color, I guessthat I find off-putting. This is obviously a matter of personalpreference as all-black interiors are common industry practice,especially farther up the price ladder. My second gripe however is more than personal. The rear-end of theSportage sits tall and proud with a tiny little slot of a rearwindow that make visibility from the driver"s seat minimalThere is a back-up camera with a nice clear wide-angle view whenthe transmission is in reverse.
But when you are not in that gearyou can"t see much out back, let alone judge how close theobject or vehicle is to yours.
